Strange coeincidence

Last night, driving to a friends house, I had Radio 1 on
and when the DJ asked for people to phone in for requests, I
thought, "I wonder if I rang up and asked for something by
BoC if they'd have it to hand? It's probably all mp3s on a
server nowadays and I'm sure they must have Dayvan Cowboy as
someone said it was on MTV the other day."

Then, coming back home, I turn on the radio and it's the
start of Dayvan cowboy. My inital reaction is, "Oh I thought
I'd taken the cd out?" Then I realised it was a CDr of Boc
Maxima that I had previously had in the car and not TCH
anyway. I glanced at the display and it said Radio 1. Odd
eh? After the track they talked a bit about the video for
it, giving warp's URL and also release date of Transcanada
Highway, as well as recommending people check out TCHP.

It was the first time I'd seriously thought about requesting
BoC (or for that matter, any band) on the radio and it was
also the first time (recorded peel session aside) I'd heard
them on it.

those are always some of the best moments in life, imo.
Makes me feel like the craziest things are sometimes
possible.

yeah have you noticed that once you recognize one of these
magic moments, they start happening more frequently over a
period of time.

Yes, I remember you saying about the streetlight going out.
It's funny, people will write them off as mere coeincidence,
but I know what coeincidence feels like; I'll come across at
least one a day, but when these sort of things happen it
actually alters how you feel. I don't know, it's as if
there's some outside force orchestrating it, but for what
purpose?

I think your story outlines the timing factor of these sort
of things. It's not like you think, when seeing something,
"Oh, someone mentioned this the other week." It's typically;
you think something and seconds later it happens or you see
it/hear it. I think it's this element that makes it feel so
strange, almost like a psychic experience. It's as if your
thought made it happen.

I know in my story there was a 2 hour gap from the start to
close, but I was thinking about requesting it literally as I
pulled up and turned of the engine (at which point the radio
went off). Then when I started the engine back up when I
came back to the car, the situation carried on, almost like
a CD starting up again.

oh stop it - it is coincidence. you're focusing your
attention on one particular thing.

unless hearing a BoC track on the radio is your idea of God
manifesting itself to you, but then you should be hearing
God screaming around you pretty much all day long.

Has it ever happened to you? And if so, will you at least
concede that it feels different to your common or garden
coeincidence, which of course everyone experiences almost
daily.

The most marked example of this sort of thing I've
experienced was when I was talking to a priest and thought
"swear" and about half a second later, he said "Damn" (which
in itself was very out of character for him). Now, nothing
we'd been talking about should have annoyed/antagonised him
to make him swear, so I had no way that I should have
reasonably expected him to swear. Likewise, I'd not before,
or since, "thought" wanting a priest to swear. As it
happened, the cause for him saying "damn" was relating to
something else that he just happened to realise at the exact
moment I willed him to swear. As I say, very out of
character for him and he looked as shocked as I was and he
apologised profusely.

Yes, you can write it and anything like it off as a
coeincidence, and I realise that there are a million
possible coeincidences a minute which don't happen, but when
the timing is so bang on and the event is such a
statistically unlikely one as this, it is a very, very
strange feeling.

For example, last week, I was thinking, "Hmm I hope they
play Gnarles Barkley- Crazy" and that was the next song on
the radio. That just felt like a normal coeincidence. Why? 3
Factors, none of which are typically present in the other
sort of coeincidences we've been talking about.

1. Reasonable statistical likelihood of x happening: In this
case, Crazy is on the radio a fair bit and whilst it may
well be only a 1 in 200 chance that it'll be on Radio 1 when
you turn it on, it's certainly common enough that it's not
easy to write it off as coeincidence.

2. Frequency with which you think of x; I've thought 4/5
times when listening to Radio 1 that I'd like the next track
to be Gnarles Barkley. Compare this to the BoC on the radio
or priest swearing thought that I'd only had once in my
lifetime.

3. Timespan; it was a few minutes later, after the host
finished talking, that the track came on; not almost
immediately

In 1, of course I mean the 1 in 200 likelihood is easy to
write off as coeincidence.

Whilst it's not quite as good as that, I've got 2 other cool
coeincidences, but they lack the "timing" element in the
others, but are still fairly interesting. My nan was in
hospital and realised the woman next to her was australian.
Now, my nan, God bless her, asks, "Oh person x I knew moved
to place y in Australia years ago, do you know them?" As if
this woman is going to even remotely have anything to do
with the person. What's shocking, is that not only does she
come from the same place, but lives next door to the woman
concerned. Insane.

The other one, is that my aunty (who lives 150 miles away
from me and my brother) had a new next door neighbour.
Invites her over for coffee and the neighbour brings some
photos of her son's (who again, lives miles away) wedding.
Bizarrely, my aunty spots my brother, in the background of
one of the pictures of the wedding. What makes it even more
mad is that the wedding was in New York and that my brother
had only been there once; for the wedding the photos were
taken at!

Right this moment, millions of people are discussing what
strange coincidences they have witnessed. They are not rare,
but they are fun. I'd say the chances of witnessing a
coincidence every now and then, whether huge (and it's the
bigger ones we make a fuss about) or small, are pretty
staggeringly high.

Ha ha, I did actually reflect on that at the time. I was
thinking; this would have been even weirder had it been 6
years ago and I was wondering if they'd play "Melissa Juice"
and they did. :)

Things just happen. Thoughts just occur. Sometimes they just
match up. Coincidence? Nay. Confluence.

Although I will admit it's an interesting feeling you get.
I've had it many times.

OMG WE ONLY LISTEN TO MUSICS NO-ONE ELSE EVER LISTENS TO!

fun fact: Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Autechre and
whathaveyou are rather big names and the likelyhood of
either of them being played on the radio or the tv isn't
that small...
