hi. keiji haino's music (or at least pictures of him) should be known to all you wire readers on this board...
i had the luck to see him last saturday in cologne... and i'm writing to tell you: it was the best performance i have seen in ages... if he should come to a place near you in the future, no matter what music you're generally into, for christ's sake, go see him! i couldn't hold back tears through certain parts of the set, it was just so amazingly intensive. rough (technical) description: he started out with just singing/screaming, at the same time recording and playing back snippets of his voice with some analogue samplers, building up kind of "one-voice-choirs" that way with an almost sacral athmosphere, almost immediatly destroyed by his screaming just to start it all over again. later he did some aaawesome guitar improvisation (ranging from clear, atmospheric (harmonies inspired by traditional japanese music) plucking to dirty blues-riffing to all-out-noise-strumming) using the same devices and towards the end he played the stored samples of his guitar back with um... some kind of movement-sensitive pads (think theremin style), deforming the sounds into some of the sickest noise i had ever heard (i heard some) by waving his hands around over the pad-thingies like
magician-mickey from fantasia on crack. thing was, one could still feel some faint harmonics going on underneath, as if they were trying to fight their way out. (the whole set lived from that kind of CONFLICT of aural extremes)...

i'm afraid i'm not too good with words... no words could really do justice to what i witnessed last saturday, though, i think... during the concert all five minutes or so caught myself unconciously shaking my head in awe and "disbelief".
when he stopped i was just completely destroyed. this guy is the übermensch. i only got 2 cds from him so far, "tenshi no gijinka" (tzadik) and
"a challenge to fate". both are recommended, the latter being a live album, still neither of them prepared me for the live experience.
