Stealing wireless access

I recently got a wireless laptop....

From my housemate's room, I am able to get online no problem
using a wireless connection somewhere in our neighbourhood.

This connection isn't available in my room. Several others
are, but all but one of these have security (passwords,
etc). However, there is one connection that I am able to
connect to in my room. The only problem is that when I make
the connection, I can't actually seem to access the internet
for some reason.

I can get into the router settings using ipconfig, and can't
find anything blocking my IP or restricting internet access
to certain IPs.

Anyone got any idea how I can access the net via this
connection? I know it's a little naughty, but it's not
really doing anyone any harm ;)

how do you know it's not doing anyone harm?

Well, I actually rarely use the internet these days - just
send emails to my girlfriend and that's about it.

If I found out I was causing anyone any harm, I'd certainly
stop :)

ehh if you are skilled, try burning a cd with 'auditor' and
booting that, its a linux installation with a lot of
wireless cracking tools on it.

Maybe that network isn't used for internet access. Have you
tried guessing the passwords on the other ones? They are
often very obvious.

why do you think its 'naughty'? Personally yes i know there
is a cost to setting up the physical aspect of servers
routers running networks etc...but internet access should be
open and available 'wirelessly' for everyone & anyone that
can get it...

even if someone else is paying for it and you're using it
without their knowledge? and jaroen is right, thou i would
not advocate this at all. everyone wants something for
nothing...

it's odd there aren't any rules or regulations asking for
advice on this message board regarding blatant illegal
activity. if it was my message board i'd delete your account

Housing and shelter should be available to all but I think
you would have a poblem with a hobo breaking into your house
and sleeping in your bed.

Also some of the fuckwit ISP's cap or restrict monthly
bandwidth usage and charge extortionate amounts if the limit
is exceeded. If you want net access just pay for it and if
you are such a low user now you would surely be able to find
a cheapish dial up service to use.

it is pretty shocking how many ppl don't even have a key on
their router. given my experience, i'd estimate at more than
50%.

The only way I can access someone else's wifi here is if I
hold my laptop up against the bedroom window, at an odd
angle. This is both impractical and exposes my activity to
the entire neighborhood.

This is why I just stick to my usual internet connection,
seated at the desk it is far more difficult for neighbours
to get an glimpse of my "old chap". Unless they try very,
very hard. Which they don't seem that motoivated about.

maybe they're uninterested to such an extent that they would
ignore your Dr. Johnson even if you had it pressed against a
window.

keep in mind that if you're using someone else's access
point, they can sniff your traffic and steal your
passwords..

an unscrupulous person might set up an unprotected access
point just for this reason..
