this was only yesterday broadcasted on dutch public television
it's a documentary about the the gay community in san francisco, or i'd imagine the promiscues part of it, that you could say has given up on battling aids up to the point where people want to get infected to be part of a community. some reasons for this are: fatalism, you're gonna get it anyway; not wanting to be left out: homosexuality is generally not so accepted in the u.s. so gay men flock to san franciso, there you want to belong to some group; social presure: it's not cool to want to use condoms at a 'bareback' party; wanting to go to through the same thing as your infected partner; political correctness towards infected (positive) people, saying something negative about aids is stigmatizing the ones that have it (really insane imo, just like the social pressure)
the documentary gave the impression there's 10's of thousands of men seeking out bareback parties and 'bugchasing' and 'giftgiving' isn't a rare exception
it was really horrible to watch but i guess also fascinating
anybody else saw this? anybody know wether things have changed in the attitude towards aids here

i didn't see the documentary, but i read an article about this a few years ago. the article said specifically that it was not at all common - that it was a very tiny group of people in the gay community doing this stuff, and that it was being blown out of proportion by the media. i dunno... but the idea of deliberately getting AIDS is completely insane and scary to me.

i'm not sure how common willfull infection with hiv is either, but i have read about it. media do tend to amplify and exaggerate issues like this.
it seems strange on the surface, but then it occurs to me that many many people engage in willfully self-destructive behavior, or if you prefer "high risk" behavior.
there is a perception, i think, that the "aids death sentence" no longer exists, if you have the resources you can afford the drugs that will maintain your health.

that's what they said - the side effects of all the drugs make your heart weaker and weaker, so the chance they'll die of heart failure is immense.
