That article says it all though. In one sentence "the average person is filmed 300 times a day", next "the police are 'too busy' to watch the footage". Then, London has the most cameras in Europe but.. the one on the bus that exploded didn't work. How many others don't work?
Oh no, we're surrounded by cameras that don't work and the one's that do aren't being watched, I feel so fucking EXPOSED.

ie, you're making a bigger deal (in terms of the words you're using) of the fact that they're putting posters up, than of the fact that they're implementing a wide-scale surveillance system that could infringe civil liberties. that's what i mean.

whilst infringement of our liberties isn't much of a problem, this is still one step closer, albiet quite a small step. thats no reason however to sit back and think its never gonna happen. complacency and thinking its not going to happen is exactly what causes things to happen.

The way they introduce these things is very slow, almost imperceptable (in practical terms) manner. This makes people not particularly inclined to fight it (civil liberties groups excepted) and also makes those who do appear petty; getting worked up over a very slight erosion of our rights and hence it's more difficult for them to win public support.
We made a big point of the fact that throughout WW2 we still couldn't demand to see someone's "papers" for no reason. Are Tony and Co. really claiming there's more of a security risk to London now than in the Blitz?!
I'm no anti-state lefty, but increasingly, I want less and less to do with our government.

as long as the cameras are in the streets and not in my home i really don't give a shit. its not like theres a man with black shades and a cigar sitting there mapping out every single persons life.

I watched some police camera show last night and they said there were at least 27 people watching cctv screens in Topshop on Oxford Street at any one time. That just seems crazy to me. I think I probably only object to cameras because Id like to think I can do bad things and get away with it but I just hate being on camera all the time.

there are two that look over the town center where I live. quite ofteh you see them swing round and move, someone is controlling them. its scary though - especially when it tracks me walking down the road and isnt looking at the bunch of 20 chavs hanging around in the other direction, shouting and throwing stuff

With regard to surveillance; I had a go of a controllable security camera on the roof of a building in Edinburgh (top of the hill, near the castle). It was undeniably fun and I can see the appeal of the job to the sort of person who relishes exerting control over others and even to people with voyeuristic leanings. It also made me realise the scope of these things; I was able to zoom in on people and "follow" them down the street for hundreds of metres, even making out faces well enough that a lip reader could tell what they were saying! I know this was a particularly good camera in a location that allowed it to cover a massive area, but I've always felt watched when in public in urban areas since then.
Hanal: Keep up the good work; You're helping fight terrorism by ensuring she's not arranging a coup or nuclear attack in her house. Why not post vids so other self-appointed "defenders of justice" can check the video for potential clues of the next 9/11. :D
