Only using the Roland SP-404 and Alesis Micron I managed to get this sound:
E_10.mp3
It's very much like Black Moth Super Rainbow or even BoC :)

and some slow attack..?
I made somewhat the same sound once using only a sine.
anyway, those small clicks.. are they intentional? 'cause if you're doing a song with this, keep the clicks and then add more as it progresses until it's very noisy then drop it into a normal beat! t'd be awesome!

well the vinyl-clicks are loud cause I let them, but yeah, I have actually thought of using distorted vinyl-clicks as beat. Could be very funny ^_^

what I really like about this is that I actually have a decent go at making tracks without using computers, since the SP-404 records onto my 1gb cf-card. There's 600 minutes of high qual recording available

I use the inner grooves of vinyls for beats all the time and it works awesomely well! kind of fills in between normal drums too if you have that in the song...
however, with this I was more thinking of just adding clicks to clicks to clicks to clicks until it was just a huge noise-ish thing and then let it go into "normal" drums...
is that sp-404 thingie good? I mean.. what can you do with it, and could you record a demo or something?

The SP-404 is great, but I have had it for almost 6 months i think, and I havent used it that much yet. But it's nice to have the build-in mic and all the effects that you could run everything through - from guitar to synth. The only downside is that you can't record the drumpatterns of the 404 onto it's own samples - as in jaming along to the drumpatterns and wanting to record it at the same time.

I'm actually trying to play around with as little equipment as possible, since i'm all tired of using computers for everything. The 404/micron-combo is one of my first tries at simplefying the sessions. I was just so happy about the first outcome that I posted it here ;)

oh yeah...and I haven't tried playing around with midi that much before, and now i'm using things as the micron midi-bpm for controlling the bpm of the 404, and I actually also figured out how to sequense my micron in ableton live. Needles to say i'm pretty happy about the micron.

yeah, it's good to have limitations occasionally! I couldn't do without the comp, though, as I need very accurate cutting and shit...

same here, but if I want to do mellow shit - like these BoC'ish tunes I fiddle around with often - I just feel the limitations give the whole thing a more acustic feeling. I'm sure I'm gonna use my laptop for the downmix, but It's still great that I can feel free about using sequenser or not.

Thats alright. But another good way to get that vinyl crackle is to just record a record crackle and load it into a sampler.

yeah, but that won't fluxuate the input. Plus I can totally control the hiss and crackle on the sp-404. Although it's a sim it does the job more than well me thinks

yeah, there's no excess sound there, plus it creates a great little loop that you can just start jamming to right away
not to spam away the thread, but i'm very pleased with how it works in this and this song...

that's exctly 2 things i want after mpc1000 & boss rc20 xl or similar...
everybody using innergrooves for beats etc should buy staalplaat's yokomono 2 vinyl with one side full of 55 empty locked grooves, o you can make beats by your own abuse of vinyl, i'll post later few of my exmples, they're also the beggining on my vinylence mix, i'll bump that thread so you'll find it....
btw what;s total amount of time that you cen get with sp 404 on it, not the memory card?
also i'm selling korg electribe es-1 if someone from here knows someone who wants it....

I was going to be doing that binge on more than two samplers thing. In the end what stopped me was my rule. No more than two samplers, no more than seven synthesizers. That rule is notwithstanding if I manage to get myself one of those old ensoniq sp12's, or a prophet 2000. That would be stupid.

That vinyl sounds interesting. I've got a few drum sounds somewhere (think it's a kick, snare and closed hh) that I inadvertantly "made" by putting my record position arrow (clock hand) overlapping the inner locked grooved. The sound of the needle hitting it and then resettling in the groove made 3 distinct sounds, which I recorded. I'll try to dig them out.

Oh yes and I've got an old damaged styli that helps the scratchy "worn out record" sound, too.

I have this awesome pedal that i can use to sample small loops and then it plays them back (although backwards as it really is a reverse delay pedal).. I did a few songs where I created the drums with just dabbing the needle on the blank space on the records for kicks and on the paper in the centre for hihats/snares.. I also occasionally put it on the grooves with sound in them for a very very short time and it makes for great percussion!

it's just called reverse delay, but setting the delay to maximum makes it a small loop sampler; it'll go on forever. then when you have a nice loop, you cut the fx send and jam to the pedal.
