i think we've had that discussion quite a few times already,
and still, I don't care much about genres.

it's a handy thing, though it can often be missleading. i
prefer comparing to other artists/bands myself.

Axion, I am unclear what you mean by genre.

Please name three genres, and thee bands in each genre. Then
tell me what advantages and disadvantages these bands and
the audience experience by categorising the bands as
examples of those genres.

Then we shall discuss your answers with the rest of the
class.

you will miss alot of things when you get stuck in one genre
basically

Genre's are good. For example when someone says "Listen to
my breakcore track" I know not to listen.

offline axion from planet rock (Sweden) on 2006-04-08 16:22 [#01875298]

like it seems many does on this forum

offline ecnadniarb on 2006-04-08 16:25 [#01875300]

Yes. Many does. So long as you don't allow your listening
to be to be limited by the genre tag (with the exception of
'breakcore' and 'emo') you will be fine.

But you just gave one aspect - that the audience will miss
things if they stick to one genre. What if they don't? I
like Chinese food but I eat other things too. It doesn't
limit me to know that cantonese chow mein is Chinese.

Categorizing by genre helps people find similar things they
might like. And it helps bands by letting the audience know
that hey, we're post rock doom-drone musicians like Godspeed
You Black Emperor, or we're electropop like Ladytron.

I don't mind genres, it does help organize lots of diverse
artists out there, the only problem with genres is
explaining them in daily life to dumbshits.

i like good music but yeah i can agree that genre is good
for explaining what you listen to at the moment.

the thing i am most bothered with is i guess and why i made
this thread that people get stuck with genres and often like
electronic music only and thats weird i think

he isn't saying he likes or dislikes genres - he's saying
there are genres and then he's saying "so what?".

in short - if people only listen to music within genre that
says something about those people, it isn't the idea of
genres that causes it.

ok this board would be alot better if this board would
covering all music styles instead of only electronic music i
think.it is covering it in some way but this is allready
labeld as a electronic music board so it is narowing it down
automaticly

well most of the time people discuss anything but electronic
music. Start a jazz thread, go ahead. Talk about tits. Talk
about Shakira. Talk about Shakira's tits.
