It used to happen sometimes if Mozilla crashed. I keep mine
backed up elsewhere. But now Firefox makes its own daily
bookmark backups.

Look in C:\Documents and Settings\[your login
name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles... should be
a bookmarkbackups directory or bookmarks.bak file in there
somewhere.

what a nightmare. do you know anything about the
'parent.lock' file that is open only while mozilla is open?
if that is deleted, apparently you can get back to your old,
customized settings. anyone know?
