From Q:
"HAVING BRIEFLY found himself in the spotlight in the
late-'90s thanks to the Come To Daddy and Windowlicker
singles, Richard James decided he liked it better in the
shadows. His next major release, 2001's Drukqs, was a
deliberate attempt to allienate both curios newcomers
(thanks to its impenetrable mesh of drum n' bass breaks) and
loyal fans (who had heard him do much the same before, omly
better). "I think it's bad to be well known", he said later,
"because you end up in people's faces whether they like you
or not. That's a horrible thought."
Post-Drukqs, James again disappeared from view, hiding out
in his home - an old bank in London's Elaphant & Castle. It
wasn't until a series of vinyl-only EPs, entitled Analord,
started appearing on his Rephlex label in January 2005 that
it became clear that he'd actually been doing some work.

"RECORDED ON analogue equipment (hence the Analord name),
the tracks brilliantly recycle elements from classic house
and techno. Reunion 2 melds furious acid scrawl with synth
harmonics; Klopjob revisits Detroit electro and the
melancholy melodies of Jame's ambient works; and while
PWSteal.Ldpinch.D takes its name from a computer virus, it
offers more incitement to dance than anything on the last
Maddona album.
It's true that none of the tracks here quite scale the
hights reached early in his career. But following the
dead-end of Drukqs, and in contrast to many of the
laptop/electronica producers he inspired, James is at least
tring to move beyond what he's achieved already" RUPERT
HOWE

4/5 stars
D/L: fenix funk, reunion 2, klopjob, PWSteal.Ldpinch.D

Q: It's been five yrs since Drukqs - what happened?
RDJ: "I just got back from an expedition to Antartica with
some friends. I've got sunburn under my chin."

Q: Did using analogue machines for yor Analord releases
bring back any memories of your rave days?
RDJ: "Yes, but I use this stuff all the time and it always
does that. The equipment has it's own smell."

Q: Were the Analord tracks recorded in the bank?
RDJ: "Yes. Like any place it puts you in a certain frame of
mind. I record in the vaults a lot and other parts of the
building have been wired up for use as echo chambers."

Q: A lot of the reverb effects have a dream like and
melancholic quality....
RDJ: " I tried quite hard not to make the tracks too
intense. There was a gap in my music listening collection I
wanted to fill. There are actually about five times as many
unreleased Analords from the last few years that will
probably never come out, but I still want to make more.
Actually, talking about it is getting me excited again."

Q: So we won't have to wait another five years for the next
Aphex album?
RDJ: "I just finished one but it probably won't be released.
Why? I can't be bothered to do any artwork."

From Mojo:

'first new album in five years from Richard D James - aka
Aphex Twin'

"Though apparently lying low since 2001's difficult to
pronounce, easy to love Druqs, Richard D James has actually
been busily - if quietly - releasing 12-inch singles under
his AFX brand. In fact, there have been eleven volumes in
what James has dubbed the Analord series - featuring no less
than 41 tracks (many of them recorded using his own
home-built synthesizers). Chosen Lords compiles the cream of
the crop in their first non-shellac manifestation. As with
anything Aphex-related it's an album proffering a broad
stylistic church, pitching Doctor Who theme techno (Pitcard)
against dodgy plumbing house (Batine Acid), playful ambient
pop (the slickly titled PWSteal.Ldpinch.D) and moments whose
only precedents are a decade and a half's worth of
head-scratchingly original Aphex Twin fare. When it come to
making smart, mischievious electronic merry, no one can
touch him"

From Knowledge:

"If the sprawling, bloated and oddly souless Drukqs left
many long-term Aphex Twin fans worried that their hero had
irrevocably lost the plot, then the eleven Analord 12-inches
that he released over 2005 went some way to restoring
people's faith. However, as anyone who forked out 50-plus
quid to collect the entire set will tell you, there were
more than a few substandard, half arsed tracks in the series
- making this 10 track 'best-of' CD a useful bit of kit. If
you like the early, pre-jungle Aphex sound - all acid bleeps
and electro beats- you'll lap this right up."

from Clash:

"Recent years have seen the lank-haired Aphex Twin take on
an aural assault stature akin to Chris Morris' comedy
output; yes we all agree it was great in the day and yes we
agree it bears repeated visits, but why have they
effectively disappeared only to remerge with disappointing
side-projects?
Seemingly aware that a new vanguard of electronic types are
poised to overrun the citadel (dig Ceephax's Hardcore wick
for home work), RDJ has combined recent vinyl-only Analord
series for highlights and trimmed/compiled them on the
iPod-friendly Chosen Lords album under the vowel-less AFX
noun. Far less convoluted than his proper full lengths
Drukqs, it benefits from a brusque immediacy that declines
any unnecessary sonic frippery in favour of acid-drenched
missives that knee you in the nuts before kissing your
forehead. With particular highlights including the
incendiary Fenix Funk5, Crying In Your Face and its
noir-frayed machinisations, plus the cobalt break-synths of
PWSteal.Ldpinch.D, AFX proves he's lord of the manor."

interesting read for some people (myself included). I like
to know what 'proffessional analysts' think so I can bask in

influence the record buyers who buy things that 'sound like
it could be interesting'... so it's a nice little window...

from Uncut (October 2005):
'Reviews' section
'The Specialist' occassional sub-section,

"PIERS MARTIN uncovers the latest manoeuvers of The Aphex
Twin
----------------------------------------------
IT'S TYPICAL. You wait nearly four years for a new Aphex
Twin record, and then 11 turn up at once. This has been a
bumper year for Richard D James fans, the most devoted of
whom have shelled out around £100 over seven months to get
his hefty Analord series on Rephlex. Unleashed without
fanfare or promotion, these 12 inch vinyl releases mark a
privately ebullient return to James' prolific "Analogue
Bubblebath" heydey in the mid-90s, when this electronic
marvel casually contributed to the rave cannon with every
offering.
Unlike 2001's Drukqs, which was a hodgepodge of styles.
James chose to limit his pallete and compose these songs in
the key of acid using vintage analogue equipment, hence the
(rather imperious) Analord title, borrowed from a recent
Luke Vibert number. A retreat, perhaps, and some tracks,
notably on the first and sixth EPs, find James squiggling
away, cautiously nostalgic. Thankfully, he hasn't included
any flashy drum n bass work-outs.
It seems James resisted the temptation to harvest this
latest crop from the thousands of unreleased tracks from his
rusty hard drives. Analord sounds like a cohesive project,
with the aim of applying his new skills to his own machines,
getting the best out of both. Even with these self imposed
restrictions, James still dazzles, confounds, infuriates and
astonishes, producing some of the wildest floor-fillers
("VBS.Redolf.B", "PWSteal.Bancos.Q" [names of virus-causing/
info-stealing computer programs]) and sweetest harmonies
("Home Made Polysynth", "PWSteal.Ldpinch.D") of his
extaordinary career.

more to follow...........

Like those De Agonstini part-work hobby mags that appear in
newsagents after Christmas, the first mail-order only
Analord 10, arrived from Rephlex in January inside a £40
faux-leather ring-binder embossed with a golden AFX logo,
containing 11 empty slipcases. For the binderless, the 10th
was released as a picture-disc. Aphex nuts - and there are
tens of thousands judging by Analord's figures - obviously
bought both. That's understandable: 10's pair, "Fenix Funk5"
and "Xmda5a" are deleriously dramatic, the latter elegantly
suturing Satie to demonic funk. Elsewhere, James squidges
malevolent new beat ("W32.Mydoom.AU@mm"), blissful house
("Laricheard" and "Phonatacid", from the excellent second
EP) and enough of those signature pastoral reveries to quell
the bores who sneer he's past his prime. He's just entering
it, if the even newer tracks he's playing out live are
anything to go by.
Analord is Aphex Twin doing what he does best: refreshing
electronic music in such an effortlessly inventive way that
you pity his peers. Once again, James dissolves the
boundries between disco, electro, techno and pop, and
stimulates the parts other musicians don't know exists. Pure
synthesized heaven, divided by eleven"

in the caption on the pic it says "Twin peaks: the Analord
series finds Richard D James coming into his prime"
