What I don't get: if you don't value human life, which is
the thing most people care about most (their own at the very
least), why should you value anything else people care about
- in this case, the earth?

major problems.

"Apparently at the speaker's direction, the speech was not
video taped by the Academy and so Forrest's may be the only
record of what was said."

All sounds a bit like a smear campaign to me.

Anyway, he's wrong about Ebola-Reston. It is airbourne, but
it doesnt have a 90% fatality rate in humans. In fact no
human has ever died from the Reston strain.
LAZY_CDC

hence I think the whole article is a bit suspect.

What I don't understand is how anyone can seperate humans
(the evolution of, along with the advancement) from nature.
It isn't likely that humans were put on earth by a force
seperate from the force that put the rest of life here. Is
there anyone who considers bird nests, beaver dams, and
other similar masses of repositioned objects anti-nature?
Then why are buildings and machines and pollution considered
by so many people to be so? It's all just a part of the
natural evolution of life.

One could also definitely argue that plans such as this one
are also just another part of nature, and that if one was
successfully followed through on, I would consider
the results to be part of nature too.

So what does that leave? Both courses of action (reducing
the human population or allowing it to progress unchanged),
are both serving nature, both equal. Then how does one
decide which to do?

My point is that since everything is part of nature, doing
something for the "benefit" of nature is just weird. Who
gets to decide what would really be a benefit, and are there
actually things such as "benefits" at all?

How can you tell what is on the outside of the box when
you're stuck inside? Is there even any outside at all, or
even an inside for that matter?

It's egotistical to decide anything at all.

i wanted to make that point i guess, but i didnt. whilst
some might argue that current human behaviour is damaging
the world around us, and i'd agree that it is, the human
race is still part of nature. it isnt man vs. nature because
man is nature.

Yep. That's the way I feel. The "Green" camp are the ones
who rather arrogantly like to draw a distinction between
what we do and other animals.

I honestly seriously doubt that even if we tried to,
we'd be able to irreperably damage the earth, long term.

-v-, you said that better than I could have

Conservative equals liberals. One extreme is no different
from the other.

Is there a difference between someone who wants to eliminate
all the bad people with a virus and someone who wants to
eliminate all the bad people with nuclear weapons? No.

Its bad chemistry. Bad chemistry in the mind of the right
person... a person who can persuade en mass... can be
devestating.

When hitler decided to commit genocide, or when he started
the ball rolling towards genocide. He thought he was doing
what was the right thing. He was wrong.

The truth of the matter is, the human mind is geared towards
self destruction. I think its a safeguard that is imbedded
in any species that manages to remove itself out from the
middle of the food chain.

The key to ballance isn't to remove that species from the
picture entirely.
Its to introduce a predator into its
ecosystem, just slightly above that species, so that that
species can become part of the food chain again.

nature, in a sense, is defined by what is not a product of
human culture. It's a vague term and barely sufficient for
discussions about the "health" of the Earth. Cancer is
natural.

on the nature vs man debate: the difference between "us" and
"the rest of nature" is that, to our best knowledge, animals
aren't aware that they're hurting nature while we
are.

what? where did you read that? I'm just saying that foxes,
for instance, if their bodies produced the same kind of shit
a car does, and nothing else in the world was different, the
fox wouldn't necessarily be aware that these fumes weren't
good for the ozone layer; the fox hasn't done research and
concluded that the ozone layer is in danger because of the
fumes cars (and in the case of, and for the sake of, the
example: foxes) produce.

What, like the farting sheep of New Zealand ?

Come on, it's clear to me that most animals don't need to
start worrying about that as they aren't really destroying
this planet. In fact you 'll find you'd be more inclined to
'destroy this planet' by removing certain species.

Anyway how the flying fuck do you know what goes into all
these creatures' minds? Elistist_fuckah! :)

Just coz they have no vocal chords and you don't seem to
understand them, doesn't mean a thing. Animals are AWARE!

nice kneejerk reaction, there.

I mean, I don't agree with the whole "90% of the Earth's

I'm gonna genetically modify a fox to produce a fine fine
gold dust in its adrenal glands and then put it around
peoples necks and scare it so that the people inhale the
gold dust and die from gold poisoning and then someone will

I didn't read the article, but it brings up an interesting
topic.

whether it's ebola or another virus/bacteria. something
like this is bound to happen eventually, whether we like it
or not. our massive human population is essentially an
untapped reservoir of biomass just waiting to be exploited
by a clever new illness. the larger it gets, the greater
the chance that some insideous new antigen will learn to
feed on this abundant food source.

it's only a matter of time i think.
