...do this:

I often take releases that I have either bought second hand
and have missing/damaged sleeves, that come in unusual
"uncrateable" sizes like "Drukqs" ,or that have just become
battered with age, and make my own.

I've got loads of plain white card 12" and 7" sleeves (and
paper inserts) that I bought in bulk ages ago and I tend to
draw on these. Either my own artwork or things from stickers
to do with the artist/release. I'll often also put info
that's useful when DJing, such as RPM for each side,
tracklising, BPM of tracks, description of which track/side
a particular sample I use a lot is, etc. Aside from the
pragmatic and aesthetic aspects, it helps me ID releases V.
quickly when flicking through a crate, rather than actually
having to read the artist/title on each one or look at the
small circular hole in the middle and read the info on the
record label.

I also think it helps from a collector's POV; not only does
it mean you're not tempted to write these things on the
original sleeves records (I'm sure most people have written
an ID on white labels, despite this devaluing them), but the
original sleeves can be put in storage.

I certainly don't do this for all releases, only done a
dozen or so, so far, but doing more as and when I have time.

haha, I tried to replicate the joyrexJ9 label, using regular
aluminum foil, but it looked crap, and not at all like
depicted below. no wonder seeing as it is printed on the
original

as for noting down rpms and such, no I don't do that. never
had any use for it basically, I think its the only thing I
use that mental space remembering technique, it almost never
fails

Technical explanation of how I generally label the sleeves
with "DJ Friendly" info. The only thing I forgot to cover
was that the brackets around certain tracks show they go
well in succession/mix together well. The blue lines between
the tracks on the left hand side (not sure if you can make
them out in the pics) correspond to white markings I made on
the record to aid quick cueing.

I've done Drukqs (see top left corner of the 4 sleeve pic).
I plan to do AFX/LFO split EP next and then Analord next.
I'll post some more pics (hopefully better quality) next
week. Enjoy.

NB: The artwork on that last pic is a snake eating itself;
the sign for infinity. This shows it's a lock grooved
record. For some reason I've done my mixtools with animals
in the artwork; this helps part of the very quick visual
sorting when flicking through crates at speed. Lots of
references to the art on the record sticker in the cover; IE
the green of the snake and the texture of it mimicks the
green texture on the sticker. Same with that Illicit record;
it's the artwork on the sticker "remixed" and drawn to a
much larger scale.

I'd switch to cd's, much too much trouble.

come to think of it, I do actually own quite a lot of vinyl,
most of which I have never heard, seeing as I don't have the
means to play them. what a git.

I stick to the original sleeves.. got a few where I can't
pick them up without the record rolling out a random side,
but they're not really that important...

Oh yeah, so you're collecting records without listening to
them. Do you really care about music ?

i write on all of my white labels and any record that doesnt
clearly say A or B side on it. i don't really care if it
devalues them because i'm not buying music so i can look at
it for some years and then sell it, i bought it so i could
listen to it and pretend to be a dj

skips?
