Cheers to all you revelers and cluricauns in your noisy,
shamrock-festooned pubs, and the lightning bolt from a
shillelagh blasting rod to those who didn’t catch the
leprechaun who’s obligated to show you his buried
treasure. Next time look for tilted spectacles and silver
shoe-buckles and then don’t look away (not even for a
second!)

the word "shillelagh" [sic]

im bloody well sympathising with you.

it's a sad day when a fellow fenian can't fight with his
brothers for the good of one's country!

ah right yeah, good shit, you know what i'm talkin about

and yeah sorry but you can't be a fenian any more either,
the yanks stole that word too, and developed a sickening
mispronunciation for it too

woke up at 1pm, cracked on with some tins of guinness at
1:30 (just in time for neighbours). then started a drinking
trek around leeds, ending up at someone's 21st birthday
celebration.

i can't believe it's only half 10 and i'm already awake.

oh right so you're american

no, that's rude

excuse my rudeness but i've just never understood this
importance people place on (family) heritage and roots...
especially those in america..

i believe in living in the present, not the past, but i
guess when you have a nation of immigrants, it's probably
only natural.

just gets on my tits when some people suddenly assume their
another nationality, because of their heritage, even though
they've never lived in that country.

which isn't what you're doing..

but what i'm doing is explaining, in a very
round-about way, why it's a touchy subject with me ,and why
oh why do i even bother

offline jules from United States on 2006-03-18 03:47 [#01862503]

ha..i agree..i suppose that happens most often here in the
u.s. because a lot of the people that really are proud to be
american are either living down south and still think they
won the civil war or are working for the guvmint sending 18
year olds to die in the name of g dubya or jesus...but
placing importance on family is fucking god damned the best
place to place it...

also, before i wrap myself in my diaper..mr murder..if you
and your girlfriend moved to madagascar tomorrow and had a
child there..would you consider your child to be african or
irish??

offline redrum from the allman brothers band (Ireland) on 2006-03-18 04:06 [#01862522]

african, as long as we lived there for the child's formative
years, ie 0-20...

although the parents have a big influence, i think it's an
influence that's overstressed.. yes our irish values,
language and culture would rub off on the child, but only up
until a certain age. the kid would be spending more time
with friends by the age of 12-13..

I really don't think our nationality would enter into the
equation much at all at all. Unless of course we were
shunned by the community for some reason relating to our
nationality or something, but I know this isn't what you're
talking about.

yeah it's odd how we are. there are a good amount of people
in the us that actually follow their heritage and stay
within "their people" but for the people that don't really
(mutts, as jules put it haha) we still don't really call
ourselves american because it really doesn't mean anything.

over time, if (and i stress if) americans get more of a
uniform appearance and way of life, i'm sure people will be
referring to american as their heritage.

all i know is i have a big fat red beard and all my names
are irish
