with bands you hear the place and the crowd through the mics
the best thing for ae would therefor be an audiance recording at a real good place in front of the boxes. this might be the case for bands too: i have some tool recording done this way and it's ace, it was advertised on oink as an soundboard actually

no, i disagree. too much of ae's sound gets lost in the audience recordings. soundboards are the best.

the audiance recordings ive heard were indeed lousy and way worse than the soundboards, however good audiance recordings are possible
the tool recording i was talking about was done with a hearing impaired device
