i listen to 90% 'idm'. As for guitar stuff i like bands like nirvana, soundgarden and pink floyd. Never really considered listening to metal but i've been listening to some radioshows and i am really starting to like some of it. A friend recommended opeth, and i saw them mentioned in a few threads here on XLT.
who here likes them and why are they so good? also, what is death metal?

I'm not too keen on death metal but a few years ago a friend of mine introduced me to this genre with bands like Marduk, Burzum, Vomitory, Behemoth... and I enjoyed them. Not for daily listening though !

......hahhahah
the excerpt from "The Leper Affinity" [Blackwater Park] made me laugh. growling or bowel-churning grunts make me laugh, everytime i hear black/death/doom metal.
"come to daddy" is more scary.

its not all grunting, there is some calmer progressive/symphonic stuff too. And i doubt it is meant to be scary.
check 'harvest'
i have most of blackwater park now but i have no idea if this is the best album to start with.

yes, this one's much better - acoustic guitar, all sounds nice. i imagine they'd call it a "metal ballad" :)
i'm not into metal music anyway, so i better shut up.
p.s. i used to play Metallica's "black album" and "justice for all" at primary school for a while....but when i discovered Ministry i started playing my "justice" tape at double speed. and it was double fun ! it sounded more like speed metal....and more like Ministry's "Psalm 69" stuff.
You mention Soundgarden....."badmotorfinger" is more metal than metal to me ;] it always was.

at allmusic one of descriptions of Opeth says "scandinavian metal". how is that kind of metal different from e.g. heavy metal or soft metal ? or nu-metal ?? :O

ok, first things first:
"i listen to 90% 'idm'." > why?
then about Opeth... i used to love them some time ago, Blackwater Park being one of my favourite albums ever and the last title-track being one of my favourite tracks ever. i'm not listening to them so much anymore now so i don't know how much i'd still like them - except for Damnation, which i still listen to quite often... this particular album is not metal. i've seen it described as "prog-rock" or whatever, i don't know those genres; anyway it's really good stuff, just too "produced" to my taste. it's also a companion album to Deliverance, which is classic-style Opeth.

what the fuck is going on here? all opeth fans are hiding!
uzim: because i love idm. i'm trying to listen to other genres but it takes time.
drunken mastah: it's not like nightwish at all. that's what i'd call goth metal, and it's awful imo.

if you or your bro have the album they're talking about i'll get some beer and come to give it a listen.
"prog rock" sounds more reasonable to me now. "harvest" would suggest that.

No, I'm allergic to clean sounds in metal. A harsh fellow, you know me, lolx.
Anyway, when I get my grant and can afford beer we should meet.

opeth is awesome. so what if i'm a little girl. fuck you.
no seriously, i enjoy many types of music. i think they are a really good band, musically, dynamically and um...something else -ally. i started listening to them as a joke pretty much, because at the time i thought all that growling was pretty silly, but then realized the music was really good. and me liking heavier music, it stuck. i like them.
blackwater park is a great place to start. if you want mellower stuff, like no metal, go for damnation. if you want harder stuff, go for deliverance or my arms you hearse. or any other album of theirs for that matter.
if you want other bands like them, check out bloodbath. they're basically the metal without the acoustic parts, but still musically excellent. also, mikael from opeth sang for them at one point. bye.
