Metal Suggestions

Kay... I just started listening to metal again, and I am
kinda lost. I know there are a few people in here who do or
have listened to metal in the past, so I was wondering if
anyone might have some suggestions. Things I am into now
are; Slayer, Danzig, Dimmu Borgir, Full Blown Chaos. Any
suggestions are much appreciated. :)

I'd recommend Meshuggah, but thats extremely hardcore,
insane time signatures, and lots of yelling.

I'm more of a Tool fan.

Also if you can find this obscure underground group
Silencer, they have good metal tunes.

if you like those bands, you'll probably like Entombed and
perhaps Sepultura (i dig their Chaos A.D. lp).

but mostly, i listen to grindcore and doom sorta stuff. my
favorite metal-ish bands of the moment: brutal truth (best
grindcore band ever? i think so), hellchild, 324,
eyehategod, converge, soilent green, doom, multiplex, (old)
dillinger escape plan, burnt by the sun... i'm leaving a
lot out, but i'm drawing a blank at the moment.

Mastodon is the best Metal band in the world.

Listen to Repulsion if you like Grindcore because they were
there first.

Slayer kicks ass too - and I still think Divine Intervention
is awesome, but after that don't bother. Reign In Blood is
of course the best Thrash album ever.

Old Metallica still rules.

There's way too much underground Metal in existence for
anyone to absorb. Listen to Gronibard, from France.

If it's Czech, chances are it kicks ass - see Ingrowing,
Contrastic, !T.O.O.H.! for examples of this.

Humor belongs in Metal. Listen to Macabre, from Chicago.

I'm drunk and drinking loads of water to avoid dehydration
tomorrow.

yeh, Sepultura's Chaos A.D. is an excellent album! the band
in their prime.
Taxidermist, you'll DEFINITELY enjoy this release.

i'd also recommend these:

Carcass - Heartwork. imo, one of the best metal albums out
there. melodic and cerebral at the same time. no metal band
could combine these two things like Carcass did!
and besides, Jeff Walker has the best growling voice ever!
:)

My Dying Bride - Like Gods Of The Sun. a doom-metal
masterpiece. it's a very powerful, melodic and dark album.
unlike most MDB's albums, this one is more uptempo and
song-structured. possibly my favorite metal release ever.

Death - Symbolic. another metal gem. kinda mix of
death/thrash/progressive rock. awesome musicianship on the
album. Chuck Schuldiner was a really talented guy...

What, getting a rose tattoo'd on your face?

Heh... Yeah, I am d/ling a bit of everyones suggestions...
heard a lot of stuff I am jamming with. Right now I am
listening to Macabre...

Lots of good stuff. I think I feel like growing a mullet and
storing trans ams and beercans in my front yard. I am sure
the bylaw enforcement people would dislike a bunch of
rotting car carcasses chilling out in the middle of Smithe
street, but I don't care.

I second that Don Cab album, some heavy moments on there. I
would recommend Meshuggah, Cynic, Dysrhythmia, The Fucking
Champs, Isis. Anyone into more technical metal should check
out Virulence. Also, most of meshuggah's songs are in 4/4.

Every single album by Suicidal tendencies.
Slipknots latest is pretty good.
Vio-lence - opressing the masses... from 1990 ( robb flynn's
old band )

and if you like melodic cheesy melodic death stuff haha...
cheesy haha!! rah rah!!!!

Dismember - massive killing capacity ( had this album in my
walkman month after month years ago back in school )

Amorphis - tales from the thousand lakes ( melodic and
melodies ) I always come back to this album for some reason,
I hate death metal singers and I think it sounds stupid but
the melodies are there so....

Mastodon has awesome music but I think their singer needs to
get his head out of his ass and realize that he can't sing.

Can anyone recommend good Dillinger Escape Plan tunes?

offline virginpusher from County Clare on 2004-11-20 09:19 [#01400644]

Mastodon - Remission
Lamb of God - Ashes of the wake
Burn the priest - selftitled
Hatebreed
Dysrhythmia
Anthrax!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(which leads me to) STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH
Casey Jones
Path of Resistance
Resolution
Refused

I really like Mastodon's vocals. Obviously he's not a
classically trained singer but I think he pulls off the rock
/ metal vocals well. I was pleasantly surprised by the
vocals on the new album.

As far as Dillinger goes, listen to "Calculating Infinity,"
not their new album. The new album sucks, despite what
anyone says. It's garbage.

Seriously i have Remission from Mastodon and i love it. The
fucking drumming is great. I think that is the same drummer
from "todays the day"

Speaking of Todays the day they are also quite good.

The unseen is punk/hardcore that works quite well.

I got a lot of Hardcore/punk/sXe/metal.

You should pick up Mastodon's new album "Leviathan." It's
really different but still kicks lots of ass. I'm not sure
if I like it more than "Remission" but it definitely rules.
It has a much more classic vibe.

The drummer and one of the guitarists from Mastodon played
on Today Is The Day's album "In The Eyes Of God." It's the
only TITD album I enjoy listening to, and it's basically
just because of the drumming.

I cant say I've heard a huge variety of Meshuggahs work, but
what I've heard is definately not "mostly 4/4"

offline Torture Garden from Feelin' 2Pacish on 2004-11-20 14:12 [#01400861]
Points: 974 Status: Lurker

Whatever you've heard it's mostly all in 4/4. they split 4/4
into 16 beats, they plays patterns grouped in uneven numbers
which eventually become even. This means that everyone can
play different patterns but come together at the end.
Occasionally they'll add beats here and there and of course
sometimes use odd times. Even Thordendal has confirmed this
method.

Every thread that i read the word "metal" in:

It is my purpose, nay, my duty to recommend opeth.
Uzim is absolutely right. I'd recomend the albums
"blackwater park", "deliverance" and "orchid", but if you
want a single track to get the flavour then "the leper
affinity" is truly amazing. Get ye to slsk, right away.
Now.

I LOVE opeth, and so should you.

Cradle of filth are fuck all like Opeth! The former has
cheesy MTV goff-rock teen angst credibilty, the latter has
earnest sentiments of Luv and Loss and Death and Despair.
But without (most of) the cheese. I know opeth can get
pretty fucking stupid at times, especially lyrically, but
still. They're a long way from CoF.

Kay, I downloaded most of these, and so far have listened to
half of them. I really liked Mastadon. I liked Meshuggah.
Entombed is actually an old favorite of mine that I had
kinda forgotten about.

Although, I really can't get into the Opeth stuff. Its a bit
too light.

Anyways, thanks a lot for the suggestions. Everybody has
