I'm wondering is there a way to assign (perhaps through the keyboard section of the control panel) certain keystrokes to special characters. I'm using a normal QWERTY keyboard, british english, on a laptop (which means i have that extra "Fn" function key at my disposal.)
What I want to do is assign, let's say, Fn+a to "ä".. It's very time consuming writing an essay in german, and copying and pasting from a series of characters (ÄÖÜäöüß) at the top of the page.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

can't you use various combinations of alt/shift+characters? like for example: alt+s = ß
don't know if its a Mac-thing or not

that's what i want to do..
alt+s would probably select a menu bar at the top that begins with "S"

look in Help for 'creating macro'.
although you'll probably do a search for 'creating marco', you obsessive mentalist.

Do this (I don't know the names of the menu items in the english version of word):
upper menu Insert -> Symbol (maybe character) -> choose the character -> assign key (or something like that) -> choose the combination of keys -> OK -> OK
Should work

there's no "assign key" function in my copy of word anyways.. but it's alright, i've made macros for all the letters i needed, qrter's advice has sufficed.

In word, you hold CTRL+SHIFT, tap : then press the letter to get umlauts on it. I used to do this a lot when I was studying german.
Also do CTRL and button above tab ` or ' button then press the letter to do left and right dashes like in french.
And CTRL+SHIFT and tap ~ then letter to do spanish twirly things.
Hope that helps. Its quite quick once you get used to it.

You can use the AutoCorrect feature to do this sort of thing. Just go into Tools>>AutoCorrect options... and in the replace box for example type in :a in the with box put the ä in the with box then just type :a hit space and it will change...only thing is you will have to backspace to get rid of the space. Probably still quicker than the other alternatives mentioned.
Another alternative would be to just type your document using :a etc. and then just doing a series of 'find and replace' at the end.
