Sufjan Stevens?

His album,"Illinoise", track 4, "John Wayne Gacy, Jr."
Chilling but beautiful. Go listen to it somewhere and listen
to these vocals:

His father was a drinker and his mother cried in bed
Folding John Wayne's t-shirts when the swingset hit his head

The neighbors they adored him
For his humor and his conversation

Look underneath the house there
Find the few living things, rotting fast, in their sleep
Oh the dead
27 people

Even more, they were boys, with their cars, summer jobs
Oh my God
Are you one of them?
He dressed up like a clown for them

With his face paint white and red
And on his best behavior
In a dark room on the bed he kissed them all
He'd kill ten thousand people

With a slight of his hand, running far, running fast to the
dead
He took off all their clothes for them
He put a cloth on their lips, quiet hands, quiet kiss on the
mouth
And in my best behavior

I am really just like him
Look beneath the floor boards
For the secrets I have hid.

yes, it's about the notorious serial killer John Wayne
Gacey. is that the point you're trying to make?

Yes. And kinda strange. There is not much beautiful about
the man himself. Peter Soto from Whitehouse have published
some words about him. Click on 67-71. Very disturbing

Man, rereading my old post there... I sound like a bit of an
ignorant douche don't I? haha. That part of the song just
really cracked me up at the time. I was probably pretty lit
when I listened to it.

I still can't really tell for sure if this song is a
sarcastic joke or an emotional rollercoaster.

Indeed, a really beautiful song. The line "...they were
boys, with their cars, summer jobs -- Oh my god!" kinda
chokes me up.

he's awful, derivative wimp-pop.

offline sleepcitymusic from Boston (United States) on 2006-03-11 10:07 [#01857600]

Eh, there's MUCH worse out there. Whether or not you enjoy
his style of music is your own business, but all music is
fairly derivative.

and what kind of thing to say is, "there's MUCH worse out
there"? so i should listen to something mediocre just
because there is something else that's even worse?

sujan stevens is a very talented songwriter. and if you
can't see that r40f then it's your loss.

derivative from what?!?! It's the songs that matter, he's
not ripping lyrics from anyone is he? his arrangements are
ordinary but that shouldn't matter.

offline sleepcitymusic from Boston (United States) on 2006-03-11 10:38 [#01857621]

r40f - Yeah, I'm instructing you to listen to worse music
because it exists...OR I'm telling you to pick your battles.
Citing one of the most heralded new songwriters of the past
few years because he plays music in a style you clearly
don't enjoy, and calling it "derivative" isn't just
uninformed, it's lazy. In this genre we're discussing
perhaps Conor Oberst would be a better example...

Sufjan is an expert at what he does, great arranging and
lyrics, I don't find him any more derivative than *insert
anyone who didn't invent music here*. I could pick his
melodic style out of a crowd with ease.

I think Illinois is a bit bloated, though when it works, it
fucking works.

i think you're the one who's uninformed since you don't seem
to understand that singer-songwriter pop existed before this
century. sufjan stevens sucks for his genre.

and furthermore, how the hell do you know what music i
listen to? you've been on this board for what, half of a
day?

r40f - *laughs* Dude, you really need to relax. It's just
music. It's also just a messageboard. Take a deep breath. No
one's gonna hurt you. This is all made even more funny
considering I only really like some of Sufjan's stuff.
Jesus.

appreciate.

Sufjan Stevens is probably the artist I've listened the most
to this year. Illinois is wonderful, and Michingan too.
