Hi, I downloaded Sky By Broadband yesterday, and this morning, I decided to download my first movie, the hilarious Starsky& Hutch remake. As soon as I started downloading, my computer lost all of it's CPU power, somehow, to downloading one film. I thought it was odd, but I didn't think much of it.
At around 12:00 (by this time the film had probably been downloading for about 2 hours), I decided to see if I could still use ANY part of the PC where the CPU power had just been completely eaten. The answer? No. I spent ages trying to shut down MSN Messenger (okay, I know that was a mistake ) and after waiting while doing some homework for about an hour, I decided to power off the PC from the mains.
When it powered up, the same thing happened. As soon as I had two Internet Explorers running (usually my PC takes 5 IEs and a music program, e.g. Fruity Loops), my PC went back into CPU-lockdown.
I turned off my PC from the mains AGAIN (something I barely EVER have to do, say once each two months) and when it was back up, I started scanning the Task Manager for any odd background processes. One program, KService.exe took my attention, being an unfamiliar program that was taking up the most CPU power. After searching the Process Library website (great for when McAfee isn't working) and finding nothing, I turned to Google. This is when I discovered some shocking news.
When you download Sky By Broadband, it tells you that you'll have to get your firewall to accept certain programs to download movies. I thought that this might be something to do with playing them back once they were downloaded, so I continued installing. Then I found that the element of it from the company Kontiki is the KService exe I had been afraid of.

KService apparently eats bandwidth by using Sky as a p2p system, uploading what you've downloaded of the film. This takes up severe bandwidth while eating more CPU power than important Windows components. Also, it starts as soon as you turn on your PC. I got an error message for it before I had actually logged in. And if you're thinking "surely it stops once you end the Sky program", it doesn't.
However, Nate at hintofsarcasm.com, one of the sites that appeared on my Google search, actually telephoned Sky, asking about the KService program:
Question: If I closed the Sky program, does all down/uploading stop?
Answer: No, if you close the Sky program, it stops. This is A LIE. Your internet speed will always be very slow as long as KService.exe is running.

Yeah, Mcafee Shredder (the only decent McAfee program) went over it for me.
