Futuristic Deja Vu - is there a term?

I am writing this thesis paper and I am trying to describe
a specific mood / atmosphere / feeling that for lack of
better words, is a type of “futuristic deja vu.” To be
more specific, its a genral feeling of otherworldliness that
could only lack description because of its “not
yet-ness,” although it seems strangely familiar.

Typically a SCI-FI strategy, it’s not a pre-cognitive
representation, nor is it post-cognitive. Rather, it’s
more like perpendicularly cognitive. It’s usually
characterized by a sense of stillness and sterility, but it
is often visually complex and vastly encoded.

Certain things that come to mind are:
-The video and graphic work of Meta
-The paintings of Inka Essenhigh (more here)
-The sculpture of Sarah Sze and Lee Bontecou
-The general atmosphere of Aeon Flux and practically the
entirety of Tron.
- And of course, the music of Autechre.

I am certain this is a form of escapism, but for this paper
it needs to be discussed intelligently. I guess there's a
sense of cybernet realism too all of this, but I was
wondering if there is actually a term or genre for this type
of work, ambiance, etc.

I think what I am getting at is, how one sees things
that do not necessarily have a cultural reference in time,
but can still label them as “futuristic.”

Like seriously, what the fuck does that mean? It’s
interesting how “futuristic” style things are often
ingrained into our visual cultural lexicon, but are often
associated with limitations of a media or technology…
(enter in the post-apocalyptic dialogue related to
futurism)

Anyways, I’m not sure if that is clear.

I guess there’s definitely a degree of cognitive
dissonance imbedded in there.

not the same but somewhat similar is narapoia , a word
coined in an Alan Nelson short story.

interesting... i think i can see what you mean. even though
i don't know of a word for that either.

for example... would some ufos and spaceships, some decades
ago (when they weren't that common/well-known in movies,
comics etc.), have belonged to this category of "futuristic
déjà vu"? maybe this feeling happens when you mix/distort
familiar elements (from the present/past) with/into unknown
ones (and so, supposed to be from the future)?

nice links by the way.

off-topic, but some of these paintings by Inka Essenhigh
have another particular quality i like, do not see often and
can't name: they're abstract, but have a figurative feel.
(even though some of them they are figurative, or
half-figurative...)

another artist i know who makes paintings with this feeling,
in a totally different style though, is Zao Wou-Ki. his
works often are like landscapes; when i look at one of his
paintings, most of the time it really feels like i'm looking
at a landscape. yet it's all abstract. (and it's really
awesome too.)

interesting, I am looking him up now. As for Inka
Essenhigh, her newest work is becoming more painterly,
figurative, representational, and surrealist in style. To
be honest I like her flatter works better.

Another artist who i gues could be in this category is
Chris Finley. more and more

I wish I could help you on this but I don't know of any word
to fit the bill of the description you've given... it seems
a made-up word (such as narapoia) is one alternative.... who
says you can't be the dictionary on this one? :)

by the way, if you wouldn't mind sharing this essay once it
is finished, I wouldn't mind reading it or proofreading it,
as the case may be.

i meant to add in that first post that I think you've picked
a very interesting topic to write about.. so good luck to
you. hope you get an A.

hey, thanks Zephyr Twin. Though I think coining a term
could be the answer, I need to be very clear with my word
choice and avoid sounding "cutesy" or "gimmicy."

Anyways, this is in fact a component for my MFA thesis
exhibit and catalog text. I should have a dedicated text,
website, etc., documenting the show when it is complete. At
some point, I am also thinking about turning this into a
printed manifesto, published book, and curated exhibition
perhaps.

I see what you mean, I don't think there is a word to
describe it. If there was then it would already have been
seen.

and that is what it means to have a feeling of deja vu for
future events. We see them, we understand them on some
level, but we cant describe them. Isnt that
uncomprehensible and weird? The wires get crossed when
conceptualizing this. Its like we dont have words for words
we dont know exist. Its as if we are describing the pink
elephant we do not own. The irony in this case is these
things do have a Form. We see them, they are what they are.
Although art historical, there similarities are
linguistically transparent.

"these things do have a Form"

Platon's Cave myth comes to my mind... as he conceptualizes
our impressions as something coming from a higher level of
reality unreacheable for us. The FACTS level oposed to the
IDEAS level...
