haha, I had never saw anything about this before. The cell
shading style of the movie is fucking awesomely mind
blowing.

Yeah it's visually stunning. It looks like it will be good
in other ways too. I was genuinely alarmed that they cast
Keanu and Winona.

this is looking very good! can't wait.
i heard alex jones (infowars.com) was hired as a
advisor/consultant for the movie. jones had a small feature
in waking life

it looks beautiful. I haven't read the book, and from that
point of view that's all this trailer really tells me.

it's the same type of animation/live overlapping that was in
some banking/mortgage companies commercials recently

personally, i think it looks awful

like in the commercials it's just comes off as a ploy to
grab people's attention.

very bad choice of actors/actresses as well

Linklater used the same effect in his film "waking life" a
few years ago, I believe.

chambre: yes, Alex Jones also has a role in this movie.

qrter: yeah, the trailer doesnt tell you much. its not an
easy book to sum up, especially in a trailer. also, no book
reviews Ive read have really captured what the book is
about. I don't know if you want me to tell you the plot. if
you do, I will.

curbcreeper: have you read the book? if not, the book is
really trippy (the main character is on lots of drugs) and
its very paranoid/whats really happening. I think the
director was wise to realize this is the perfect story to be
told with this kind of animation. its trippy as hell... it
looks like a cartoon, but it looks like real life, kind of
like the drug haze vibe of the novel. also, the casting
seems spot in to me. keanu as a dopped up drug addict, and
esp downey as Borris, whos a prick

I think if I was to watch that whole thing in the theatre
I'd vomit everywhere. not because the actual movie was bad
or anything.

alex jones as consultant, what the fuck? :)

Honestly, for those who haven't seen Waking Life: get a
life.
Also worth seeing are Dazed & Confused, and Slacker. I've
heard Tape is good too.

actually, having read the book, this trailer has some
spoilers. some BIG spoilers even... of course if you haven't
read it at all you don't know it yet, but somewhere in the
movie (or in the book if you read it first) you will
suspect/know some things about the characters you're not
supposed to suspect/know... : /

about the story...
actually most of it is a "normal", quite "realistic",
story about drugs, paranoia and schizophrenia. there are a
few parts that go towards the "metaphysical" but it's only a
few parts. most of them are in the trailer by the way.

Well, I know what Alex is and what Alex does... :)

If, by consultant, Linklater means someone who's fun to talk
to about our surveillance dystopia, then sure I can see the
connection. Maybe it's the connotations of the word
"consultant" that are hilarious - professional expertise? On
what, PKD? I don't think so. On drugs? Nah, he's only got
the outsider's perspective (although I know he's at least
done some pot), while this book is about subjective
experiences. Alex is just a local celebrity and a fun guy to
hang around with.

This is a good time to read A Scanner Darkly, though! Now
I'm just hoping they (whoever "they" are) will do Valis next
- and then, hopefully, The Divine Invasion & The
Transmigration of Timothy Archer. Dream on, silly me!

this certainly looks interesting, however i have a massive
hate of CGI in films....they should have celshaded it all by
hand using ink

maybe i'm asking too much

why did they make those commercials into a movie? the
commercials looked shit and so does this stuff. all the
expressions on the actors faces looks over-exaggerated and
it is really annoying to watch. it may be impressive
technology, but it looks like a terrible idea for a film.

word!

the entire "cel shading" idea thingie has been the worst
fucking visual concept ever since it was first introduced
into "games" or wahtever...

just because you can use an effect doesn't mean you should.
blade runner holds up today as a great film and
visually-impressive. this trailer looks like a myspace ad
or something.

zeus: i won't. now tell me to shut up because only people
who like the thing the thread is about are allowed to talk.

I agree with Arf on this one. I got tired of the effect
after 30seconds. And it's got Keanu in it, come oooon

i think the effect is great, and fits the material (as it
did in "waking life").

can't tell if it's any good or not, but i'm looking forward
to it.

Definitely an improvement, Keanu Reeves has never looked so
good! :D

Bit suprised they got hollywood backing to make this film
considering the heavy themes of the book. Drug
abuse/paranoia etc.

I think that animation effect will end up probably working
much better in waking life.. it gives a dreamy atmosphere
and works with the non-linear plot.. like how each section
has a very different style, for each little conversation
that the guy has. I heard that the animation was done
simultaneously by different groups of animators having not
seen the other's parts.
Though, one thing that really bothered me is how unrealistic
a lot the dialogue was in waking life.. I know that the
movie wasn't at all trying to be realistic.. but most of it
seemed really forced. Like the writer had come up a lot of
ideas, studied some stuff and just sort of crammed it all
together.. I know the main character was supposed to be
dreaming mostly, but how often, even in while awake, do
people mention random ass topics like that in passing,
providing all sorts of concrete details and everything? I
think it would've probably worked better having been knocked
a few degrees into documentary territory or fiction.
