besides Aphex and autechre, what other artists define the
IDM genre?

for me it would be one of: BoC, venetian snares, FSOL or
mu-ziq

for me:

snares sucks (not really amazing, just ok)
fsol sucks (too oldated, but maybe i just dont know it)
mu ziq sucks (irregular and not always motivated/ing)
boc is amazing but they should release more music, damn!

i vote for bogdan raczynski!

oh, i belive in braindance...

i'd say squarepusher, boc and muziq share 3rd spot. vsnares
is breakcore..

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2006-02-17 06:57 [#01843074]

oh wait, there are two questions here; you want to know who
defines the genre or want to go into a silly debate about
who's good and who's bad??

offline pigster from melbs on 2006-02-17 07:04 [#01843076]

its boc. rip offs of squarepusher can sometimes be related
to afx.
but boc rip offs and the the whole boc sound is a whole
unique and... very up there part of idm if you know what i
mean.

why does everything have to be about the best? each one of
the artists listed above have their own sound and style and
have practically created new genres with what they put out.
i really don't see what the purpose to rating favorites is,
debating over your choices, when everyone is going to have
different ideas. then again, i guess there wouldn't be much
to talk about.

also, i think autechre are boring. i'll listen to that shit
if i want to go to sleep and have boring dreams.

yeah its just something to muse over while having tea and
biscuits. just wondered if any one artist was considered to
be definitive in the genre, minus the obvious aphex twin and
autechre.

BOC. Everything else in IDM pretty much falls somewhere
between BOC, AFX, and AE.

Mu-ziq, Squarepusher and Snares are too similar to some of
AFX's work.

moby,
or the prodigy

or the sugababes. they look like idm, and they're, like,
with the three of them. so they should come in third (->afx
one, ae two...)

Orbital and BoC are definitely at the same level as Aphex
and Autechre. There really is a step down from these artists
to all other electronic artists (Chris Clark, Squarepusher,
Mu-Ziq, etc.) FSOL, Orb, Prodigy might deserve a place at
the top for their contribution to the early electronic
scene, but I don't think music has aged that well/is
particularly lasting.
