besides Aphex and autechre, what other artists define the IDM genre?
for me it would be one of: BoC, venetian snares, FSOL or mu-ziq

why does everything have to be about the best? each one of the artists listed above have their own sound and style and have practically created new genres with what they put out. i really don't see what the purpose to rating favorites is, debating over your choices, when everyone is going to have different ideas. then again, i guess there wouldn't be much to talk about.
also, i think autechre are boring. i'll listen to that shit if i want to go to sleep and have boring dreams.

BOC. Everything else in IDM pretty much falls somewhere between BOC, AFX, and AE.
Mu-ziq, Squarepusher and Snares are too similar to some of AFX's work.

Orbital and BoC are definitely at the same level as Aphex and Autechre. There really is a step down from these artists to all other electronic artists (Chris Clark, Squarepusher, Mu-Ziq, etc.) FSOL, Orb, Prodigy might deserve a place at the top for their contribution to the early electronic scene, but I don't think music has aged that well/is particularly lasting.
