When does music stop being music?
What do you think?

When there is no rhythm. But that doesnt mean it becomes
crap.

there is music without rhythm! ambient for example...

All 'music'has rhythm. Gwarek 2 doesnt, but a lot of ambient
does. Plus i never said i didnt like it. I love it infact.

Bit of a minefield really.

well i didn't say you said you hated ambient.

a lot of ambient stuff is just floating there you know.

Hmmmm, its always tough. Some people only call it music if
it has vocals in it.

I suppose music is down to the person themselves. I class
music as rhythmical noise, but then again, i love really
ambient stuff, and i'll call it music.

I'd like to rephrase my meaning of music. Sound made by
humans.

when construction and deconstruction cancel each other out -
when the tension is at its greatest level, but has no land
marks (ie no sound) to reference the resultant tension.

to me any sound can be called music, it depends how one
listens to it ??? be it traffic, a washing machine or leaves
brushing against each other in the wind. but then this
leaves the whole meaning of music a little redundant.

I guess it has to be processed in a certain way ... ie
recorded or played (as an instrument) or something ?? i
don't know ..

Otherwise I'll just opt for the "verse chorus verse" option
:)

sounds that are actually put into any type of order or
sequence other than their natural occurence: even if random
if it is intentially made sound it can be considered music;
even talking is considered music by some people

oops, "music is..."

offline korben dallas from nz on 2002-03-02 23:51 [#00109199]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

mmm.. yeah .. i guess - the intention of the sound is quite
a good definition type thing.

Like .. someone aimlessly mopping a floor wouldn't
intentionally do it to make music [yet it still makes a
sound], but as soon as he like does it in rhythm - with the
intention of making that sound, it could be considered
music?

humm well i think music stops sounding like music when it
starts sounding like your hitting a baby with a cat

"When does music stop being music?"

when there is no sound.

this one composer made a piece for the piano which was just
a pause. was it the cage guy?

I don't consider straight up noise as being music. I think
Jingle has it right.

When certain people think so, whatever someone thinks is
music, to them it is. It cant get more simple or right than
that.

john cage was his name..... my friend says he was a genius

Me and my mum always argue over wot is art.... Tracey Emin
for example, my mum doesnt think she makes art. The
arguement is the same as the arguement about music.

offline jingle from London (United Kingdom) on 2002-03-03 02:26 [#00109283]
Points: 502 Status: Regular

the track is called 4:33 by john cage and it is the sound of
him sitting in front of a piano not playing, but it is more
about humour than music

tracy emin does indeed make art, just shitty self-indulgent
art that is basically her going "boohoo, i feel sorry for
myself and you should feel sorry for me too..." i don't give
a shit if her first period was traumatic, cos i am sure that
very few women out there go "hey! my wombs first
disintergration is really ace!" sorry, just venting

on a similar tip, too many people use the experimental tag
to give credability to their poor work including
noise-makers: a very small number create genuine pieces of
art but most are cunts who can't hack it: throbbing gristle=
good, richard devine =megacunt

there are no limits
if there were... who would put them?
nobody can
music is over any fucking critic saying what is music or it
is not.

if you want to travel nearby the limits, then get
autechre...they are always expanding the meaning of music

b.t.w. i aint having a go at you with that last remark but i
was speaking to this girl who says she is a warp-die-hard
fan then mispronounced autechre, didn't know who most of the
artists were and then said "aphex twin" in this weird way:
IT IS SAID AY FEX [short pause] twin!!!!!!!!!!! not affects
twin or aphextwin (where they say it with no little pause)

some of those notes are pretty funny -- look at the back of
the drukqs CD after it says the usual bs about aphex is a
registered trademark:

"(This must be in the same font, text size etc. as the rest
of artwork and clearly legible)"

but back on topic, i don't think music exists.

Our music teacher said music was anything "With a noticable
beat" That would make a tap dripping music and SAW2 tracks
not! I think it's hard to define, I've even found the beats
of a motor ticking over/seagulls musical. I don't know...

Darth Manchu, that's not true. A lot of Classical music has
inconsistent rhythms and that's definitely music. I think
anything can be musical. But that's me.

rhythm is all around us - EVERYTHING has a rhythm, so
therefore everything is music, therefore nothing is music
since there can be no antimusic and there goes music in a

no, it depends on the speakers' interpretation of 'noise' --
noise can be applied to any fluctuation, and not necessarily
aural.
