Why does everyone, and I mean everyone-be it on myspace, msn, and most forums-say "your" when it's mean to be "you're"? I don't actually care about that stuff (after all, my typing is often trash, and it's the internets), but this is beginning to make me feel a little insane. The amount of times I've seen "your an idiot", "your pathetic", "your x y and z" or even "your going to do x y and z" is reaching an alarmingly high level.

right.. while I'm here... I have a little trouble with one grammatical point about appostrophes.
I know that you say, "that is the woman's hat" and you also say "those are the womens' hats"
but what do you do if the word already ends in an "s"? Would you write.. "Cygnus' ego" or "Cygnus's ego"? because it's a singular word and so it should be apostrophe s but it already ends in an s and i have a vague recollection of my English teacher telling me years ago that if it does, you miss off the 2nd s after the apostrophe

"not all americans are mad" I think this one is saying that americans are not necassarily mad and...
"all americans are not mad" is saying that americans are all inherently non-mad.

haha you're on the rampage! :D
excellent question and one i had to put to my english teacher myself.
Basically, the apostrophe after the s is usually for plurals:
The tables' legs The cats' ears
(when talking about many tables and many cats).
When it comes to names, it's a bit trickier and the rule-of-thumb which I go by is that if you say "es" at the end, when talking, to denote possession, then you add an extra 's instead of just an apostrophe -
Aengus's love for prawns cygnus's love for phat beats
There are some exceptions to this - I think you're meant to say "Jesus" even when it's the possessive -
Jesus' death should be said as "Jesus. Death.", even though i'd say "Jesuses death" myself.
it's a tricky one.
tubs of respect for a pertinent and worthwhile question on language usage :)

I find when people write "then" when they mean "than" even more annoying than that. Like just then.
I find it annoying when I type 'that' instead of 'than', but that's just a typo.
