might as well get mad at a cupcake or donut.

This goes along the same lines of the days when people said
(and some still do) that electronic music is talentless
because you haven't learnt to play a traditional instrument.
People are experimenting with sounds, this will in some
cases lead to a new wave of artists who harness the added
sonic potential VST's give them. Many, many times I have
used a VST effect which has in turn inspired me to try new
things, either through effect replication or the development
of additional elements to an effect. It is just a part of a
persons development.

If I have repeated what someone else has said I apologise
but I couldn't be arsed reading everything.

I'm not particularly young, but I use VSTi's a lot. They're
by far they cheapest way of getting different synthesisers
into your tracks. If I had an ideal setup, it would just be
a TB-303, TR-606, some Juno-y type thing and maybe a TR-808.
That's all you need! But I haven't got the thousands of
pounds required for this kind of set-up, so I use VSTi's. I
think the Audiorealism Bassline Pro's dead good and
authentic sounding. The Korg MS-20 VSTi's good. All the
Arturia stuff sounds wicked. I dunno, I like 'em. Don't
tend to use VST effects, or just effects generally most of
the time. They mess up the mix too much - doesn't sound
clear enough, you can't hear all the different noises. And
yeah, fuck all that Glitch shit. Play it to your Gran and
see what she makes of it......

I get lost in these conversations that refer to "the beats"
in quasi-mystical terms. And as Ecnad touches upon, a few
years ago the argument would've been "Drum Programming????
Learn to play the fucking drums!" so, it's not like there's
anything... new about any of this.

Funny, I thought she was just posing with it because it
might give her some kind of credibility, or because she had
(or was trying to get) some kind of endorsment deal with
Korg.

the entrace is just small to youn gguys who re hearing about
this 'laptop deathmatch' stuff, and just making electronic
music, not only is the LDM their entrance but its really a
limited entrance cause they suck at making beats, they just
went out and bouht powerbooks or toshibas for ableton live
or reason, or fruityloops, and its lame, like, if youre
performing in a crowd no one wants to hear your 2 measure
trance loops. putting the glitch vst on it can make it
sounds funkier but it still doesnt do much i mean it just
seems anti-developmental

im doing music cause i dont konw how to make video games, do
programming or anything like that, and the tracks ive been
doing especially to me is like making video games, theres
bosses, mid-bosses, etc, thats my approach, theres rules in
my music thats taken straight from video game theory
(especially 2D shooters such as ikaruga and dodonpachi)
thats MY entrance, my entrance was not ... oh... wow lets
see how long it takes until i sound like richard devine, or
autechre, or kid 606, or venetian snares, its
anti-developmental. some may deny the mentality but its
definitely for example like in 1999/2000 in my area when we
got 106.7 and everybody went out and bought DJ kits ... its
like, fucking lame. its the same thing, and no im not
refferring to everywhere, im slanted cause its how it goes
down where i live. but one was to really say, 'hey , there
is more to electronic music than getting famous', 'there are
popular flavors of electronic music' - kinda like a baskin
robbins ice cream store, yeah vanilla mocha and fuckin
rainbow sherbert are gonna be the most famous but there are
dozens of other flavors you havent tried,

when the guy invented the wheel, all the detractors
complained that using feet kept you closer to the mother
earth and if you're rolling about, you can't smell all the
roses and shit. and the guy who invented the wheel
rebutted, "why would i want to smell shit?"

I don't get the two mp3s. I disliked both of them, so you
could say both sound "kind of anti-progresive or
anti-developmental".
I don't think that the difference in the final outcome
justifies your original statement.
So I unpaused my Frank Zappa CD and let that carry on
playing and that did sound progressive and developmental and
the lyrics to "Catholic Girls" makes me laugh, so erm yeah
VST or not, good music is good and bad music is bad, who
cares how you did it really.

Like I said earlier, if you can hear the effects than they
didn't do a very good job with using them. I think a lot of
IDM has niched itself so far into itself, that it isn't
going to pull itself out. So stop making IDM.

knowing the basic layouts of 4/4 rhythms in any case doesn't
make one a champion, or require much musical knowledge or
talent
i don't see the difference between making mediocre 4/4's and
flexing "random" vsts to make glitch/4's

I agree with you about Audiorealism bassline, it's
brilliant. I blind tested myself and only identified the
right instrument (IE whether it was a real 303 or the VST)
in 60% of the cases (just chance/wild guessing would
probably be 50%). With the drive/distortion on it, you can
actually make it sound a bit dirtier/grittier than a real
303, so side by side the real 303 is the more clean
"emulated" sounding one.
