This really is some good music... I'm listening to Gwely
Mernans, and I love it... the soft song, crazy song, soft
song format is needed I think, or we'd all go insane...

I agree. i think the way the tracks are ordered works
really well -- you get a little bit of everything.

in my opinion, drukqs is one of the worst aphex albums. if
you listen to icbyd or come to daddy, you'll realize how
much better they are. er...that's just my opinion....

Perhaps you shouldnt even compare them. it like 2 different
things.

i think drukqs is, musically, the best aphex album. The
problem is that it has some different styles and has not a
perfect cohesion.

Drukqs is very unorthadox

I like most of it, but Im really not a fan of those short,
piano tracks

I like the piano tracks, especiallthe last track on cd1 and
track 9

If you were told that the cheesy piano tracks were written
by moby, or some pop artist like alicia keys, I'm sure you
would hate them. the reason why everyone likes those songs
is because they're written by aphex twin.

offline xlr from Boston (United States) on 2002-03-02 23:21 [#00109181]
Points: 4904 Status: Regular

they're not cheesy. Most aren't very complex, but what's
wrong with that?

Martytan: I'll have to disagree with you there... if a pop
artist was making trax like that I would at least download
them.

Some are cheesy though, like the last one on disc 1.

drukqs is my favourite
I know many of you will think that i am not even a real
fan... but man what can i say if i really think that drukqs
is the one i enjoy the most.
I love the old stuff... classics, caustic, surfin, saw
8592...i really love it (more and more with time) I admire I
care... and rdj album, come to daddy, windowlicker... those
are excellent pieces of music history...but the one i prefer
listening to is drukqs

the thing with drukqs is that he hasn't broken new ground:
every aphex album moved to a new area, but drukqs is quite
retro in terms of the acidy feel to it. aphex is probably
sick of lesser artists trying to steal his production style
and making a wanky hash of it: people where expecting
groundbreaking stuff but instead got older style production.
the tracks show that he is a good composer, not just a good
producer and that even with the old acid gear or just a
piano he can still blow everything else out of the water.
nothing very new in it but still lush

Why cant you compare drukqs to other aphex albums?

Sure, it is a different style, but all aphex albums are a
different style.

I think drukqs is okay, it does what it wants, its just not
my style. I like more well thought out melodies and beats,
over random smashing and mashing percussions.

Drukqs does break new ground. Listen more.

nah, in terms of production the ground stays firmly intact
mate :)
the 808 and 909 type percussion and the 303 style acidy bit
s are just like old acid tracks and stuff (although they are
digital versions by the sound of it) , just they are a bit
more frentic. piano is piano (nothing new there), the
harmonium type stuff is like bits of rdj album and the latin
break tracks are just like iz-us. compare the production on
windowlicker to drukqs and you will see what i mean, cos
wndowlicker sound pretty unique but drukqs doesn't

talking about something else which I do not have the words
for.

in terms of the sounds used for all the tracks they are not
as unconventional as on other releases, and in fact are
quite mainstream sounds used in a very intricate way: the
instraments used aren't groundbreaking and he has done quite
dancey beats, that admitadly are quite complex in places are
far less complex than bouncing ball or mummy mix. the
melodies sound pure aphex to so i don't see what is so
groundbreaking about it ( nothing he hasn't done before and
little that are unique to him)

Martytan: No, I disagree... the thing that would turn us off
is that we would hear Moby's name, and if we think he sucks,
he would just assume the piano tracks sucked... we wouldn't
give them a chance... because we like Aphex Twin we give the
piano tracks a chance, and they are very very nice...

I really like Drukqs... I get a headache if I listen to it
too much, but that's cause it's just so crazy... BoC never
give me a headache!!! :)

The piano tracks are great, and I'd love them no matter WHO
the artist was. I just like minimalistic piano tunes alot, I
always have... pianos always sounded like candy to my ear.
So I'd like them even if it was Britney Spears tracks... but
I probabaly wouldn't admit that, in that case... ;-)

i agree - but tracks like ziggomatic do have groundbreaking
production, even if the sounds themselves are all well
known, listen to what he do with common sounds... same with
54 cymru beats, nothings new in the sounds but woa what an
intricate organization...

I love the piano pieces and I love Drukqs, his most complex,
advanced, best album so far imo.

"the reason why everyone likes those songs is because
they're written by aphex twin" whoa, It cant get more
ignorant that this.

One track on Drukqs is just as strong as other artsists
whole albums. Just take Mt St Michael, a beatiful track with
so much detail and stuff going on in that track (an album
with 16 tracks with such brainfucking would collapse your
brain:=) .

So I take a little Drukqs dose a day, thats good for me.

Drukqs was inspired by MHTRTC...

i don't listen to come to daddy as much as the other ones. i
did when it first came out. but i always went back to the
other ones. saw, rdj, icbyd, on, and saw2 have played a
major roll in my life .

I don't know that I've ever heard RDJ program drums as
masterfully as he does in track 1, disc 2.

Its like he standard beat, waved a magic wand of aphexian
logic on it, and it metamorphosed into the most intensely
satisfying programming i've ever heard. The build and
orgasm of raw frequencies towards midsong is absolutely
incredible. I like the rest of the album a lot, but after a
lot of listens, that track stands out as most phenomenal.
