i just finished this game today, it's hands down the best
game of its generation. the gameplay is just ASTOUNDING, i
have never played a game that has been 100% entertainment
and fascination all the way through. oh, and the graphics
are mesmerizing, i never tire from admiring the scenery.
well, until those fucking ganados come moaning, that is.

anyone played through it? currently playing it? what are
your thoughts?

I've got one question : will it run on a 2500+, 512MB,
rad9600pro on an emulator?

Everybody is praising it

*possible spoilers*

I have it for ps2. I wouldn't say its the best game of its
generation, but it is good and I really dont like RE games.
The characters are pretty dumb though. Like
spanish-midget-conquistador man is fucking lame. I thought
the boss battle was anti-climatic and too predictable,
especially after fighting spanish-midget-conquistador man.
And I also got annoyed by the voices of the enemies
repeating over and over in the exact same way.

But the whole thing is like a giant carnival ride and there
are some definately nasty ass fucking enemies in this game.
I really enjoyed shitting my pants while fighting the Chief
in that burning shed. And the chainsaw guy (and the chainsaw
sisters) are just fucking evil and take so many shots to
bring down. And you totally pwn the presidents daughter at
the end by rejecting her poon. I think I yelled 'oh snap'
when that happened.

Gamecube/PS2 only.

*more possible spoilers*

stoner: Of course they're dumb, they've got huge fucking
demonic insectoid alien pieces of shit living inside of
them, on top of that they're being controlled by some
religious supervillain nutcase with an even BIGGER one
inside of him! I think the enemies worked very well,
coming in hordes and quite possibly overwhelming you.
Reloading is a bitch. Especially when you're left with only
rifle ammo (yeah, it happened :().

Yeah, the last boss was WAY too easy. Ater Krauser, he
seemed a bit... out of form. But I was actually a bit
relieved by him cutting me some slack.

i can't vouch for the ps2 version, but i hear it's the same
only with pre-rendered movie sequences and lower res
textures.

cygnus: i really don't think it was THAT scary. a few times,
though, the enemies' grunts got to me.

condemned for the 360, on the other hand... christ, that is
a harsh game. doom 3 was pretty grim as well.

It's third person survival horror. The previous games were
mostly about zombies. This new one takes a different route.
If you have a Gamecube or PS2 available, I strongly
recommend you check it out.

Number 4 wasn't bad, but it just couldn't keep me
interested.

i love games that shit me up, i remember playing doom 3, it
was a fucking great game, i played the expansion a bit but
wasn't very happy, it was better than quake 4 then.

some ps2 games can be emulated, after all the ps2 is only
700mhz or so, nothing above 750.

pc these days have double/triple that, my pc is 2.0ghz. so
its over double, i've seen some games ported from ps2 to the
emulator, some of the graphic textures get fucked, but some
are playable.

ill look into it.

Oh good, I count on you exsub.
Actually PS2 is 300MHz and XBox is in fact PIII 733, but I
can believe that the amount of code translating can kill
even the latest PC.

Well, the Xbox 360 is still struggling with emulation of a
lot of Xbox 1 games. And it has VERY optimized software for
its hardware.

Res 4 is my favourite story driven game of all time. People
who say "I played 1/2/3/veronica, I'm sick of res games/not
going to play this" are really missing out. It's a
completely different sort of game. The " The Mercenaries"
bonus game is intense to and the only game I've played that
is still scary no matter how many times you replay it. That
chainsaw sound still sends shivers down my spine.

Staz: Agree 100% with what you say about the final boss.

staz
no, not because xbox 360 cannot handle it, it is because
they have to recompile it and edit some files, every game
that you are able to play on xbox 360 has been modified, in
other words.. i doubt you'll be able to play a game that has
been fixed for the xbox 360 on the xbox.

exsub, from what i've understood, they're running xbox 1
bios emulation that supports a selection of xbox 1 game
architectures. many of the games supported in the backwards
compabibility feature are games that share wide
architectural similarites with the "main" games they're
wanting to feature.

yesh! Resident Evil 4 rocks everyone's socks... I actually
already cried of agony whenever i ran into them chainsaw
chaps :'( and my head has already been eaten off by them
monster things living inside them monks because Leon was
obviously TOO FUCKING BUSY RELOADING HIS GUN!! Other then
that, this is by far one of the best games i've played ever,
and that i will most likely replay after i finished it

staz
the main problem was switching from nvidia to ati, they've
had to change the architecture of the games to work
specifically on ati.

they have to change shaders etc, thats why the old games (
none- unless modified ) will only work on xbox 360

Yeah it's pretty much the best game of the gen. It's the new
standard for action/adventure games. Scary thing is, I think
the new ''formula'' they just established can still be
vastly tweaked and improved, tightened up. RE5 is going to
be... oh God *spurt

Yeah, if the graphics live up to the concept trailer, the
gameplay manages to improve upon RE4's and it comes a great
story to tie it all together, RE5 might just stand as the
next benchmark in survival horror.

I'm very optimistic.

I'm glad you played with this game mate. If I remember
correctly, in the past you had posted something like "I
wanna play this".

I think that Drunken Mastah should buy this game as well, he
still finds the Silent Hill Series better, moreover he also
said that Resident Evil doesn't scare him enough as SH does,
but well, the quarter episode hasn't been made to scare
people but to amaze people with its new and innovative
gameplay.

There is a glitch with Splinter Cell:Chaos Theory on the 360
in vs mode when spies use optic camo they have a bright
green glowing aura around them making them more visable than
they would be without. Guess that was a coding error.

The camera/controls on the classic RE was completely
frustrating. The over the shoulder third person camera on
RE4 is awesome. After playing through RE4 I went back and
tried to play the remake of the original and RE0 for
Gamecube and couldn't get into them because I was so spoiled
by RE4. There is something that could be neat about the
fixed "surveilance" camera of the classic games because it
does heighten certain creepiness aspects and maybe it would
be cool it was something that could be toggled on/off, but
by itself the frustrations outweigh the charms.

I'm more of a PC gamer but I bought a PS2 just to play
Shadow of the Colossus and Ico. A couple of questions:
1) How does it compare quality wise to SOTC?
2) Is the PS2 version inferior to the Gamecube version, is
it worth it to buy a Gamecube just for this game?

offline staz on 2006-02-02 00:28 [#01832367]

The Gamecube version looks prettier, basically. The gameplay
remains unchanged, although the PS2 version comes with a few
bonus modes as a tack-on since it came out a lot later. It
also lags a bit, remember that the hardware is being
thoroughly squeezed for this game!

I haven't tried SOTC, although it looks absolutely
fantastic. I think there's a distinct difference of "feel"
between those two games, since SOTC bases itself more on
exploration and the boss battle puzzles. RE4 is much more
action oriented and linear, but this works massively to its
advantage. These games just fall in their separate
ballparks.

I don't know how one could compare RE4 and SOTC. I spent
about a minute trying to think of a way, but I can't.
Regardless, they're both absolute must-haves, two of the
defining games of 2005.

I'm playing the Mercenaries right now, holy shit - this is
intense! I've managed to unlock every character, but I'm
struggling a bit trying to unlock the handcannon... Got
58.000 on my best run as Leon on Level 1, bit of a wonder.
Krauser's my favorite merc though, he's just relentless with
that arm... Anyone managed to unlock everything, eh?

About the Mercenaries, I've conquered all characters but I
still haven't got the Handcannon because it's really hard to
get five stars for each level, I believe that I have got 5
stars in the village with Leon and Wesker and in the church
with Hunk and Ada. Inside the quarter level of the
Mercenaries there is also a maniac with a double chainsaw,
it scares me a lot.

In the real story instead I bought the Chicago Typewritter,
it's fucking powerful, infact this weapon is also capable to
kill those regenerators full of Plagas with few shots.

I just got 5 stars with Krauser in the village... first 5
star ever, heh, about 70000 points. I love Krauser, I wish I
could just do the 5 star thing with him alone and not bother
with the other characters, that bow of his packs a fucking
punch. I'm really good at getting in headshots now, so it's
just a cavalcade of exploding noggins everywhere I go.

I love Leon, the shoutgun still is my fave weapon ever. I
used to kill like 5 Ganados at time with it. I suck to use
Ada, I still don't know how I could get 5 stars with her. I
really liked the part that Krauser has in the game,
especially when he fights with his amazing knife.
