well, first rally is over with.
was 100x crazier and fun than i had ever expected ... not to
mention much harder/dangerous than i thought.

conditions were shear/pure ice. i was in the car for the
first time and had litle shakedown time due to the complete
lack of snow/ice in detroit.

rally was over 2 days, friday and saturday (mixed day/night
stages)
the goal for the weekend was just to finish (so i could get
my coefficient points) ... and face it, not many people
finish their first event because it's easy to start pushing
really hard then get caught out.

so friday went pretty slow to get a feel for the car and how
much i could trust the tires and how crazy the ice got
(nokian/hakka rsi's are fukin amazing tires, wow).

everybody had plenty of off's, but the nice thing about this
event (especially for being a first/learning event) was that
speeds are slower and the snow banks generally stop you
before you get to the trees,

plenty of drama, on the first stage, first turn the guys
from italy in their mitz evo launched the snow bank and put
it into the trees.

all 4 tires off the ground, was quite a site to see.

everybody had some good offs and generally once you slide
into a snowbank and stick it, codriver hops out as quick as
possible and gets the tow rope ready for the next car to
come by and yank you out.

we had a couple good offs on friday, but it wasnt untli
friday night when things got real bad.

at service, i had my "noob to rally" buddy who was working
service for me, take the tires off and check for damange and
clear any ice/snow outa there.

well, we had some gravel tires holding down the tarp, and he
accidently put a gravel tire on the front driver side

keep in mind at this point i have an open/stock differential
(i.e. tire with least resistance/traction gets the torque).

so we get the lightpod on and head out for the nightstages.

first night stage went good, except for a subie had rolled
less than 1/2 mile into the stage, eek ,

2nd night stage got crazy. very very hilly stage and every
turn was practically off camber and blind

needless to say we had about 4 big offs then, and i lost all
confidence, couldnt figure out why we had no grip/traction
at all.

finished the rally (the goal) and got it back to service.

it wasnt until the next morning at parc expose' that i
realized there was a gravel tire on there (completely
worthless on ice) ... i was pretty excited and not really
pissed just because i finally understood why the night
before wwas fuking GARBAGE for grip.

got it swapped out and the rest of the day sat went good.
lots of varying conditions, all ice in the morning (cold,)
the n the sun came out and melted the top layer making
thinsg CRAZY slick

then everyone was tearing it up so we got a lot of mud and
LWB/puddles to hydro over.

then at night came rain rain rain rain and the lastn ight
stages were glare ice

whew, got full confidence with the car about noon on sat and
frmo there pushed pretty good and had 0 mistakes on the last
8 stages or so.

my bro was there and took some footage

some video footage my bro took

crazy stuff on ice like that, but i cant believe how much
fun it was. the roads were ok for the spectator shots, but
everywhere else things were VERY narrow with little room for
error.

good times good times. car came home with basically 0 damage

video

was crazy driving on shear ice with no studs, had to be very
careful at times lol, many people were caught out but it was
a blast once i got the hang of the car

Sounds awesome, adventure ahoy. I don't know shit about cars
or racing, but the rally thing always appealed to me more
than the traditional racing. Rallisport Challenge 2 for Xbox
is the extent of my rally experience, insanely fun in those
environments. Real life is probably funner, even without the
''reset position'' button for when you drive off cliffs or
into rivers.

Glad the race went well and you didn't fall into the "damn,
they're quicker than me, I have to catch up" trap and end up
pushing too hard and crashing in a big way. Good video, I'd
like to see more.

"it wasnt until the next morning at parc expose' that i
realized there was a gravel tire on there (completely
worthless on ice) ... i was pretty excited and not really
pissed just because i finally understood why the night

Ha ha, those sort of problems are a weird mixture of
annoying/reassuring. You kick yourself that you didn't spot
it sooner, but are relieved that the reason the vehicle
wasn't behaving right was mechanical and not because you're
skillless. I recently had an off on my bike and since then
it was a bit wobbly, in spite of the frame/forks having been
signed off as undamaged and the damage seeming to be purely
aesthetic. I thought it was just me being shakey/lacking
confidence on cold slippery roads, following a crash. It was
only after 2 weeks riding like this, when I decided to
soften up the suspension to allow more travel for better
braking on ice, that I spotted the right hand preload had
got knocked 1.5 notches out! No wonder it wasn't planted
when I was leaning heavily. :D

I'm saving up to do a days rally training next winter (I
only really enjoy cars on mud/ice). No formal prior
experience, just thrashing my old, stock 106 on gravel and
mud. Any experience/warnings you want to pass on before I do
it?

yeah. that's about the first line of advice is not to push
hard until you understand the car.

and trust me, once you get on stage it's difficult to do
that. i was pretty slow on the first day, but then looking
at all the DNF's it's kinda reassuring to just focus on
finishing.
