IDM thumbs down.

The "IDM" cognomen is bogus. There is no doubt that people
like squarepusher and AFX don't want to be grouped into a
category like this. Why don't you just stop using it.

no category. Is prefuse 73 hip-hop, experimental hip-hop,
IDM or jazz? Does it change the music if you call it IDM or
would you no longer like afx if it was called 'elecro-rock
'n jazz'.

If genres help you find artists you like then you're
probably missing out on a ton of artists you might like but
havent given a chance because they are in a different genre.

lol... Xanatos I see what your getting at... but i tend to
agree. IDM is pretty lame... I just lump it all into the
electoinc catagory... makes more sence to me.

XD

squarepusher has a lot of "traditional instruments" though.
so sqpsh could be considered traditional jazz with electro
influences.

I thought IDM was an acronym for Industrial Dance Music.

That makes more sence to me and it sounds a little less
pretentios

still can't "dance" to most of it.

i think it should be called "IEM" (Intelligent Electronic
Music)
that would make more sense and give newbies to
new-age/electronica a better idea of what to expect -
instead of expecting a danceable song or catchy melody
(which may apply, but not always)

The ''dance'' has always thrown me off... I can't dance to
99% of this stuff.

I don't like the term ''IDM'', but I won't stop using it.
It's just convenient. We all know what kind of music and
what artists someone's talking about when they mention IDM.
Just makes life easy.

I dont think there is anything wrong with the term idm. Its
an easy, if not lazy, way to describe a certain style,
nothin wrong with that.

yeah...i dont really like saying 'idm' either sounds too
pretentious...and 'experimental electronic music' is a bit
long...so when asked what i listen to ..i say 'ya
know..electronic stuff' and usually get the response
'ohhh..techno eh? oom ts oom ts oom ts'

not all "idm" is experimental.. but blah blah blah

braindance it is... just cus it sounds cooler and a lot less
pretentious than IDM

braindance is even more lame, imo. why not stick with
electronic music? that's what it is, after all. usually i
don't bother explaining to other ppl what i listen to,
though.

well a lot of rock uses electronic equipment does it not?
aren't the genre boundaries becoming more blurred anyways?
why not say "fuck genres" and just call it "sound" or
"noise" or "music"? if something sounds good it doesn't
matter what category people feel the need to put it in --
and the category can stop people from giving music a chance
- maybe people would be more open about trying new music if
the stigma of a label was not attached?

well i think ppl still want to use categories cause it makes
it easier to discuss music? that's just the way it is. but
you're right, in a way. cd stores always have seperate
sections for the various genres, it's just a question of
convenience, i think.

yeah, Intelligent Dance Music, come on... the media would
say "This IDM music is for listening with headphones on" or
something like that... well, why is it called intelligent
DANCE music then? Call it Intelligent Listening Music if
anything...

yeah, convenience - i hate that concept - convenience food,
convenience tv, convenience everything - convenience means
gentlefolk don't have to think any more - and the word
convention has the same root as convenience too as an
interesting side-note... and the word "fact" comes from the
root "to make"...shows that the difference between fact and
opinion is not so large after all.

offline Omneignotumus on 2002-03-02 17:32 [#00108957]

Back when I was first into electronic composers most people
said "electroacoustic". Both Aphex Twin and Squarepusher
have worked their way into this type of instrumentation. I
almost feel a worthy distinction between art driven music
and commercially driven music, but those lines are blurred
also.

offline Omneignotumus on 2002-03-02 17:33 [#00108958]

Im still used to saying electroacoustic, so I mostly use
that in description of AFX and square.

offline Ubik from United States on 2002-03-02 17:46 [#00108963]

its "dance" because it evolved a lot from dance, acid house,
techno, hip-hop, disco, industrial dance... why do people
have to pretend this is "better" than those types of music,
that is snobbish and stupid, segregating music like that...
Rephlex has made a decades worth of music indebted to acid
house, drawing from it, but people still insist that it is
"better" than that lame, lower class music that you would
shake you booty at instead of your braincells. and, yes,
this is a pointless discussion, because if you insist on
segregating, you are going to keep on trying to draw
unbreakable boundries to try to get the music segregated.

and isn't all "good" music, Intelligent Listening Music?

if you want a label, how about Adult Themed Anti-Contempary
Post-Dance

actually Post-Dance is a term that might have some meaning,
but it sounds pretty lame thou

... are you labeling the music... or are you trying to label
yourself, a label to show the world how smart and cool you
really are?
