Does anyone know the answer to this riddle?
One man has six of them, two men have 8. If women have them, they are halved. If children use them, they have 18. I have none, but you have several. They are red at day and black at night.

it has to be Islamic rights, children are given 18 rights in Saudi Arabia constitution, but women have half the rights of men under some socities, Muslim men have the basic 6 rights when meeting another, and i see reference to Eight Rights groups dealing with interaction between people as well, though in a consumer sense? That doesn't address why rights would be black at night or "only read during the day" so to speak
I also tried immigration laws, with VISAs expiring after 6 years and children having 18 years to declare citizenship if they have the grounds for it, but that isn't even remotely close

I do not know the answer... But I have to say, it is odd that '8' and '18' aren't written out, and the last two lines...
I have none, but you have several. They are red at day and black at night.
Seem to be confusing.

One man has six of them, two men have 8. six is enough to feed two men, who thus 'ate'? If women have them, they are halved. eaten, they're halved - what's only half eaten? If children use them, they have 18. is there something which can be used &/or eaten? I have none, but you have several. any theory I had is breaking down now They are red at day and black at night. something to do with raw and cooked?
six ... hmm. Six pieces of some sort of meat, perhaps? ARGH!

Pretty sure this ought to have some linguistic answer. Maybe it's been translated from another language and just doesn't work in English.

No that doesn't sound right.
Here are some of my efforts, none of them satisfactory:
i) He is talking about a pawn in chess. It doesn't address
much really but it sort of explains the red/black bit. The children
have 18 could refer to the number of points 2 'children' (pawns) would be worth after promotion into a Queen... blah...
ii) He is talking about 'twins'. Women who have them are 'halved' could refer to a C-section...and a few other tenuous
connections.
iii) He is talking about XX vs. XY chromosomal inheritance in some way.
iv) He is referring to golf in some way.
v) He is referring to 'balls' in some way, perhaps in the context of Snooker or 8-ball.
pretty cryptic :(

It works in portuguese! This riddle is famous here. Here is a proper translation of how does it works.
One man has six of them, two men have 8. This riddle have a solution.
If women have them, they are halved. But only very clever people can find it.
If children use them, they have 18. Or maybe only the very stupid.
I have none, but you have several. I guess there's no answer at all.
They are red at day and black at night. I'm sorry.
