For anybody who was wanting the Niko workstation, openlabs just premiered this at Namm. Its about half the size, but about 1/3 of the price. If only they had one that came in grey or black...

it seems like you could just buy a computer, a controller and a recordy thingy for the same price and it would be more portable than this monstrosity in this photo...

You could just buy a computer. But then you would have to buy two or three midi controllers, an LCD touch screen, a good audio interface that delivers more than two channels simultaneous recording into multiple tracks, enough ram and processor to run up to 200 different instances of VSTi, and a bunch of other things. Then find a way to package them into one unit and make it so that it all powers up off of one switch.
Anyways, this is an awfull place to chat. Anytime I come here with something interesting, its just a bunch of people being shitheads. Have a good one people.

I mean, why buy any kind of hardware? You could save yourself thousands of dollars and use illegal cracked software, or spend 800 dollars on a full cubase suite than only works half the time and fill your computer up with shitty sounding free VSTi.

2. Bluey Purple doesn't work with any of my outfits.
3. I need a 9 octave keyboard at the very least.

I wonder if these open synths feature dual monitor support. That would be sweet for live gigs actually. In addition to the on board display have 2 flat, touch screen monitors rigged up to it and have different modules displayed in each. Also, I wonder if they could allow for more than one pointer active at a time, so where a mouse can't be on two different places at once your fingers or a stylus could be manipulation multiple knobs, faders etc. if one didn't want to deal with mapping a hardware controller.

I have yet to purchase a knob panel midi controller, but one thing I think about it, how do you remember what you have each knob mapped to? I mean, it would change from song to song what VSTs were being used etc. Maybe once I used one it might make more sense, but it seems like it would be nice if there was an LCD display that was able to show what knobs were mapped to what controls and so forth.

Personally, when I use a midi controller, I just use the autoassign feature that comes in most software.
But most controllers come with presets that you can switch from, so you don't need to worry about getting confused. Right now, I use an X-station, which has dedicated knobs for practically every function of a synthesizer, so it just map my software to the standard functions of my xstation in the most logical fashion.
But if you are looking for a controller that takes the brainwork out of remembering your patches, then you can get that swank new novation ReMote 25 sl, that automatically reads your instruments parameters, maps them to the knobs accordingly, and even has an LCD screen to list them for you.Lazy_Sex

I'll check that out. I would want to use it to control more than just a softsynth, though. I would want some knobs controlling synths, but then maybe other knobs controlling effects parameters on various audio tracks in ableton. Maybe that isn't something that can really be done I don't know. I'll have to look into it more.

Probly not if you have it going out in USB, but if you having it going out through midi, then you probly can. Just make sure you have your midi CC# that are assigned to other synthsizers turned off so that it doesn't screw up anything. But that depends on what synthesizer you are using, because most don't allow you to change cc#'s
