The Machinist was fucking awful. Doesn't compare to Lynch in anyway apart from it's own overstretched pretensions.

also, it's a little more comical than lynch (very black comedy, though), but i'd also recommend martin scorcese's "after hours." see it with "wild at heart" and "the wizard of oz."

last but not least, i absolutely recommend "city of lost children," probably more than anything else. unfortunately the english translation on the dvd subtitles leaves a lot to be desired (they are different from the theatrical subtitles, which were better), but they'll have to do.
if you like, i will repeat "city of lost children" over and over until you see it, to make sure you don't forget.

I thought Cube was interesting enough to sit through, even with the horrible acting, but I probably wouldn't watch it again.
I suppose you're probably looking for surrealistic movies or movies with a lot of symbolism, or just movies that are presented in an alternative way. Besides those mentioned, here are a few more:
Anything by the Brothers Quay is great - especially Institute Benjamenta. Most of their shorts are on DVD now, but there are a few newer films that I have no idea how to see (Piano Tuner of Earthquakes, In Absentia, etc.)
Anything by Jan Svankmajer is also great, most notably Alice, Little Otik and Faust.
A Zed and Two Noughts by Peter Greenway is pretty good, and the rest of his films probably are too, though I haven't seen them.
I also really like the Guy Maddin movies I've seen - The Saddest Music in the World being among the best.
Then you could watch Bunuel films. Un Chien Andalou is a classic... also Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie.
Then there is Brazil and other Terry Gilliam movies.
Umm... also the movies of Jean Cocteau, Fritz Lang, and Murnau...
