thanks to my previous thread - ive come across that bab.it
looks top-notch BUT - seems that it cannot be used for
purpose of DVD watching, game-playin,etc since its stereo
based system. toms hardware guide says they used second card
as additional one just for non-recording issues, and it was
Audigy 2 ZS. i have Audigy 2 NX,which is external USB sound
card. its very good, but it has no ASIO drivers written to
it
.
questions goes : is it ok to have these two cards together ?

audigy would operate through USB (2.0),and E-MU as PCI for
recording. what about using foobar ? do i have to change the
output in every game, player, application i will use? that
might be a hassle ...

users of E-MU system-help please. im keen to buy this
baby, but since ive read about that stereo issue-i dunno.i
have few more days to think it over but its the time i wont
think of anything more - i need help at this stage.

thanks in advance.

well, we never tried, but one thing I'll tell you before you
buy it.. ask at the store if you can "borrow" it or whatever
(just make sure you can return it easily if it doesn't
work). A friend has an E-mu 1820 and there's lots of weird
stuff, like when we use acid (the program), we have to
switch to the window with the e-mu mixing utility thingie
and then back to acid to get sound.. sometimes that won't
even work, and we have to configure acid all over again,
though its configuration is ok (we have to click the
drop-down menus and select the already selected unit and
values and then click "ok"). however, we think it may be
some non-compatability issue with some other hardware in the
computer...

anyway, you can probably have two soundcards, and even if
you can't have them both at the same time, windows allows
you to create several "hardware profiles" that you can
switch between on startup (so if you want to make music you
start the profile where the e-mu is active, and if you want
to play games or watch movies, you start the other one).
However, I think what those people meant is that you can't
have surround sound, so it's not ideal for movies, but it
will most likely play the sound from the movie only in
stereo... however, I think there's an optical out on the
unit, so you can probably get it to send digital audio
signals to a surround reciever if that's what you got...

I have an audigy 2 platinum zs, and I like to use my x
station as the main card for some of my computer software.
It also makes using hardware effects on my computer easier,
because I can be running all the audio comming out of my x
station and then into the ins on my audigy.

So yes, the answer is yes, you can have two audio
interfaces.

ok. i can. now - how i will make it work ? do i need to
change preferences in all applications, leave old audigy in
allplayers and stuff, and set up theE-Mu in music software ?
what about games ? i like to play a little bit sometimes.
what will happen when i will launch teh game ? and : i will
have to keep the additional old speakers for audigy,as i
want to connect active monitors to E-Mu ? like, both of them
will have to be Onall of the time, or is there away to
connect audigy to new E-Mu,or speakers ?

Well, you will have one audiocard that your speakers are
connected to, and then the other one. As far as my knowledge
is concerned, you would need to run the out of your second
audiocard through to the line in of the main one, but some
audiocards will have software that you can edit the internal
routings.

So in each program, just select which audiocard you want to
do your audio processing.

aha. and the second aone, audigy, would be to game/dvd use
with old speakers for example. but what if i willlaunch some
game? will it pick up one of them automatically ?

I think games will go through the audiocard that you have
sellected as default. I have an audigy, and audio always
runs through that, but my x station is connected to my
computer via usb, and as long as the drivers are loaded, I
can select it as the output for any music program.

Just a note, e-mu is a creative subsidiary. I would check
into some consumer reviews before you go out an purchase it,
because creative is known for chinsing out when it comes to
writing additional drivers and support software after their
stuff has been released.
