doom 3

now that ive a PC that can play the latest games, i got
Doom 3.

all i can say is that visually, the game is arresting. it is
the best looking first person shooter i've ever played.

in the sound arena there is much left to be desired. what
you have is all of these TOTALLY sci-fi looking levels, and
these extremely dark , gothic tones. it just does not match.
and then there was that crappy menu music. why does it have
to be.. i dunno.. so ROCKY? let's get some alien sounding
synthesizers in there, some grungy sounding bass lines for
rigth before im getting attacked by a squad of imps...

anyway's, i've just got to delta labs. having a lot of fun
blasting the shit out of enemies. the PDA thing? not really
a fan. it's kinda lame.

I loved it! Played it in my dark cellar with surround sound,
lovely.

totally blow me away.

THE BEAST! evil! that shit does not scare me.

It's dark and evil because it's a doom game and doom games
are about the demons of hell attacking humanity. Doom1,
Doom2 and now Doom3. Too bad they wrote the hell part out of
the movie as it's easily the coolest and best parts of the
game.

Oh man, so untrue. This was the only not-so-scary level. In
hell everything can happen and devilish creatures belong
there. But it was fun.

The best level was the one that introduced babys from hell.
When I first heard their bone-chilling whispering I refused
to open the door and stopped playing for the next 3 days.
When I saw them it turned into a peculiar feeling you only
get when you shoot a baby in the face and it actually IS the
right thing to do. I mean, groovy, yeah.

The only disappointment in this game was the skeletor with
homing missiles - lame, very lame.

And I think it plays best without any music.

I didn't say it was the scariest part of the game, but it
was the coolest. Those "modular" walls rebuilding themselves
and the all the design was quite stunning, but the
earlier/darkest parts were of course much more filled with
tension and "fear".

I wish they would make a complete pre-accident version of
the facility so I could just walk around and watch everyone
working etc, wish they would do the same with black mesa
from Half-Life too.

I loved Doom 3. I know the whole one handed flashlight
nonsense is rediculous, but I made a concerted effort not to
let it bother me and once I got over that I thought it was
great.

I think the darkness of everything was pretty awesome,
really.

I couldn't shake the feeling I was playing an old doom
game.

hey a door, ohnoes I need the red key, etc. etc.

HL2, although about as linear, felt much more like a living
world to me. I love it when a game does that.

Yeah, doom was exceedingly linear. It would've been
cooler if they had broken away from that a bit.

HL2 got silly in that aspect too, though. the bit just
before the hoovercraft/boat thing, when you had to walk over
a field filled with buried headcrabs.. there was this
strange little path created by planks and crap fallen over
in such a way that you couldn't just walk across the field.

still, I thought Doom 3 showed too much of the skeleton of a
game and HL2 had me more immersed.

I liked Doom 3, good game. The linearity didn't bother me,
it's not like I wanted to wander around a huge space colony
getting lost or anything. I just wanted to walk around a
huge space colony, look at stuff (I really like angular
metallic halls and weird containment units) and of course
kill shit when shit jumps out at me. I just liked the
setting, in general... even though my hand was being held,
at least I was being led through a detailed industrial
environment and it felt immsersive to me. Case in point,
whenever I walked by windows with a view of the Martian
surface or sky, I felt pretty queasy thinking about what
would happen if they broke. It's not a big point, but it
made me realize I was into the game. The fighting was old
school and kind of OK.

Hell was stupid as hell though. And the game was stretched
way too thin, as is most every FPS game these days.

But I liked it. On the other hand, I played Quake 4 the
other day, and despite being nearly indistinguishable from
Doom 3 at first glance, it's total shit. And that just
further makes me appreciate the little things that made me
enjoy Doom 3. The pace in Q4 is sped up to point where I
can't even see what the fuck I'm gunning down, and there's
no time to enjoy the artistic elements of the game (what
little ''art'' there IS in this game, anyway... ugh).

as if they never played mario

mario was pretty linear, howcome nobody complained that
mario was too linear

It sure is a nice game but the environment is a bit
unvarying. Too much of the same if you ask me... then again,
what else can someone expect from Doom.

I don't know if it's something for you but be sure to check
out Call of Duty 2, this game is really amazing! And like
qrter said, HL2 is worth checking out as well.

Well, there are definitely linear games that can be so much
fun that you are engrossed and not at all distracted... I
mean hell, old school games were like this almost
exclusively. Contra, Super Mario Bros and the like; you
just had a great time running through it.. I mean, those
games were as linear as they could possibly be and yet
retained hella fun and playability.

Now, with this generation of game they've got the power to
give the player utmost freedom in these realistic 3
dimensional environments, So, when they pretty much force
the corridor 1-direction only playing style, it kinda
distracts you and pulls you out of what is meant to be an
immersive virtual world.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that as the games have
gotten so much more advanced in the way they look, the devs
have to pay even more attention to the artificial
constraints they put on the player or else they run the risk
of making the game LESS immersive.

people complain, because people have grown up, yet games
seem kind of stunted.

all kinds of money is pumped into making games look more and
more realistic, yet the gameplay stays at an infantile
stage. you also see this in storytelling - only recently are
game designers catching on to the idea that perhaps they
should focus a bit more on the writing, not just on
visuals.

like I said, HL2 also is very linear, and that certainly has
been one of the things that really disappointed me about the
game. but the gameworld seemed so much more alive
than what I saw in Doom 3.
