Because Sultans of Swing (The Best of) is an absolutely
fantastic album. Romeo and Juliet is the best love song
ever. They're guitar Gods. The production is sublime. It's
the only album I've listened to regularly for 15 years.
"Money for nothing" is the track they use to break the will
of terrorists in prolonged sieges. Mark Knopfler started the
whole "white head band" fashion thing that 80s hip hop seems
to of (wrongly)been given credit for. "Twisting by the Pool"
is a great track to dance to when you're with friends and
bevvied up, in the summer. They were a classic case of wrong
time and wrong place (and hence criminally underrated).
Knopfler has done loads for charity, but unlike
cringe-inducing Bono, Geldoff et al, he is discrete and
tasteful about it and doesn't use it as a publicity vehicle.
Mark Knopfler has been going for years and still turns out
great stuff. He even does movie soundtracks. The melancholy
that runs through their stuff makes MHTRC seem lighthearted
and artificial in comparison. The list goes on and on.

Sure, they may not be the coolest band to like and they have
done a lot of crap tracks (I like to think of them as the
squarepusher of soft rock: A lot of rubbish, with 1 or 2
good tracks an album. However, the fact that they have an
album with the best tracks collected on it, something >[]er
should do, means you only need one record by them).
