identifying obscurely labelled records

is there semiautomated way to do this (such as a website
that you can browse for similar looking records, and have
possible matches returned?)

i'm mainly talking records that have absolutely no
alphanumeric characters on either the cover or the record;
sometimes strange symbols, sometimes just plain colouring.
all are electronica, or avant garde'ish (of course).

Most CDs have a catalogue number printed in the clear bit at
the centre. You can use this to pair up CDs with their
cases. I have loads of CDs with no other useful
markings on the discs. It's quite annoying.

whenever i see something labelled like that, i always buy it
since its obviously electronic. its just that sort of style.
a lot of records like that are just unnamed white labels
that are supposed to be anonymous.

and if you mean vinyl, there's generally the cat# etched
into the run-out.

yeah, that's what i normally look for, but i've got a couple
of records here that don't even have that.

thats what i mean. completely blank ones. if theres a cat
number its usually much easier.

can't you listen to them and decipher who/what/when and
where?

No Cat#? You're fucked then really.

That said, I read about a program yesterday that tries to
identify music by hearing it through your Mic. Only on a Mac
at the moment though. Shit, it was on one of my RSS feeds.
This'll make it harder to find.

isn't that what that cddb thingie did? I remember if you
found an album not in their db, you could add it, and you
had to upload the first 10 seconds of the song or something
so that it could recognise it...

try ripping the audio from the album and playing the mp3 on
some program that connects to that cddb thingie (though I
think it has a different name nowadays).

what I said except that you knew of a program that does what
I suggested for'ya.

Actually if you're not in an unapproachable mood and are
knowledgable in the matter: How does the program work?-
surely it'd have to have a massive data bank featuring as
many songs as possible, also the program must have taken
ages to write as the creators must of had to summarise the
various songs into recogniseable motifs. Well it's in your
hands to enlighten me....

oh, musicbrainz. fuck, forgot about that - thanks.

although, i think it's probably going to be far more
accurate on digitally ripped music than an analog rip.

Only if it's on their database. Some obsure avant
garde/electronica music with no label in the first place
probably isn't going to be on there.
