i bought some 5.1 surround sound headphones for gaming a
while back. they are pretty damn nice for listening to
music, better than my old sony studio headphones.

they dont look as cool though....so that kinda sucks.

i'd be happy if autechre released a surround sound version
of any song from tri-repetae or chiastic slide.

Nuane in 5.1 would. be. Sick.

which headphones specifically, and how much did you pay for
them?

wouldn't mind getting a pair of something myself.

man i have no idea what has been release din 5.1 so far, all
i can really say is that nine inch nails release of with
teeth that ame out this year where its like hi-def super cd
or something. dont really know how it works out, and i have
not clue what other artists have done that. haent heard the
nine inch nail release myself either. prolly sounds fat tho.

problem with a 5.1 release is you could not release it on
something like BLEEP, i dunno how the encoding works, how
you encode a 5.1 audio file. imagine the day when it becomes
rel popular, and the files stand as like 600mb files..

nice picture.

Orbital released 5.1 dvd with tracks from The Altogether
album. I checked it and it sounded a bit enhanced. A few
additional sounds here and there within the speakers space.

5.1 headphones are really nice for first person shooters
like Call of Duty. Makes it easier to hear where your enemy
is. The ones I got are the Turtle Beach Ear Force HPA and
they cost about $70 US. They come with a removable mic,
too.

Richie Hawtin's DE9: Transitions mix is in 5.1 surround
sound.

also: sure, a format like bleep can work fine. 5.1 isn't
hugely different to 2 channel audio; there's just more
channels. i'm pretty sure ogg/flac support 5.1, for
example.

would it be possible, if on a CD release, that certain
tracks were encoded 5.1 versus others that were regular
2-channel?

we must continue to raise the demand!! we demand autechre
tracks in 5.1!!!

# Economics.

1. The desire to possess a commodity or make use of a
service, combined with the ability to purchase it.
2. The amount of a commodity or service that people are
ready to buy for a given price: Supply should rise to meet
demand.

= we must increase the demand!!!

I thought 5.1 must be on DVD media, not CD

offline xf from Australia on 2005-12-17 19:57 [#01802535]

i don't think there's a commonly used cd format that uses
5.1, but i could be wrong (and with uncompressed audio,
you'd turn a 80 minute cd into less than 40 minutes [more
channels] - not good for much else apart from singles or
short ep's).

there's dvd audio, and yes, 5.1 + 2 encodes are quite
normal.

i've got a few 5.1 releases, including with teeth. haven't
got a 5.1 setup though, so haven't heard it in 5.1 glory
yet. a 5.1/7.1 monitor setup is bloody expensive, hence the
interest in headphones.

i'd love to get into 5.1 audio, both listening and creating.
moving from a simple 2d plane into complete 3d aural space,
it could be mindblowing, the mindfuckery possible makes me
all tingly. i'm all for 5.1 autechre - after decent gear
becomes affordable :-)

thats good info. i know this guy in dallas who does 4
channel shows only. he'll have beats blasting at you from
the front and sweep these real watery sounds from back to
front, all kinds of 'mindfuckery' as you say, it works quite
well in a live setting. there was this one time he was
playing the guitar and just having these beats blasting at
the front and sweeping all other noises and water-blendy
melodies from the back to the front, it was excellent. id
like to learn how to do that myself but i think my laptop'd
explode....

have you listened to with teeth dvd on 2 channel audio? does
it sound any better versus the regular CD on a 2 channel
system?

SACD

ah, hell, there is a 5.1 "cd format" (note quotes). the
hybrid format appears to just be a double layered disc
though, a normal cd layer that can be read in normal cd
players, and then another, entirely seperate layer which
requires a special sacd drive (with the 5.1 audio).

so, technically, the 5.1 isn't really a cd at all.

interesting solution to retain backwards compatibility,
though. i see sony have encumbered it with copy protection
shit. christ, won't they learn that just scares people away
from their otherwise great technologies?

and as far as affordable gear goes i've bought this for
$200, sounds excellent too. link

bass is real karate kick and it was a stroll to setup..

haha, nice. that sounds amazing live.

re: with teeth - i don't know, i've tried to compare them a
few times (2 channel dvd audio, versus cd audio) and haven't
really noticed any major differences. it might be the
player/sound card i was trying to use, though (creative
dvd-audio, audigy card, both more consumer level), though
headphones/monitors; i suspect it may sound quite different
utilising digital out.

some of the sounds do sound 'sharper', but it's so subtle it
might just be my imagination (as that's how i'd expect it to
sound).

might try doing it again through better equipment.

looks good, but i'd be after monitors or something with an
accurate sound response, rather than consumer level gear -
music listening primarily happens where i create music, and
i'm wishing to utilise the same speaker setup.

hence why headphones sound so promising. :-)

you've got me curious now, as i can get sony gear wholesale
and it's actually quite affordable indeed.

i find on most 'home' grade gear, the high end and the low
end might sound tight, but the mid range sounds constrained
and muddy as hell. what are your experiences?

offline cygnus from nowhere and everyplace on 2005-12-18 02:12 [#01802567]

the sound is very good. to compensate for the mid-range i
just turn down the 'treble' setting on the unit and up the
volume. fixes that. but, even without doing the mid-range
sounds good. i acknowledge that it could sound a lot better
if i spent more money but it's not on my mind when i'm
watching a movie like 'spriggan' with 5.1 audio. it is
aurally arrresting and it's out of my mind.

also, i have the speakers closer together than suggested by
sony. if the speakers were much farther away from eachother
the sound would not be as good. i have a preset for
listening to music on the system and one for watching
movies. on the unit you can adjust the individual volumes
for front left, center, front right, rear right, rear left,
and the sub. individually.

i dont really have a 'top-of-the-range' system but nin -
downward spiral 5.1 and sacd 5.1 sounds amazing. (especially
ruiner). couldnt remember a vast notable difference on with
teeth - might warrant a listen or 2 today.

ae 5.1 wishlist would have to include
eutow
rsdio
entire LP5
pro radii

also some richard devine 5.1 would also be amazing.

Richard devine is supposedly making a 5.1 album.

Sony HT-DDW670 Multi-Channel Output: 100 Watts x 5 (RMS 10%
THD)
I'd stay away from home-theatre-in-a-box systems, they are
pretty much the equivalent of those boombox type systems,
just more speakers.

Wattage confuses me. Why would they send 100 watts through
those skinny little wires to those tiny little speakers?

I decided to look into a 5.1 system and have the components
in mind. I plan to get it as soon as I clear up selling this
car and switching insurance on my other one. If you're
looking for budget/entry speakers the Athena F2
received a lot of praise in audiophile circles (see reviews
in link), despite only being about $200-300/speaker. There
has since been released another generation, F2.2, but the
original F2 can now be found for less than $200 each.
They're said to compare in sound to speakers that could cost
you $1000 each. So I'm going to get 4 of these, their
center channel, and a 12"sub, and because I work for a
company that does business with them, I can order these for
super cheap. Like each PAIR of F2.2's is $239 including
shipping. Picked out a marantz 80Wx7 receiver, and a denon
dvd player. Should be pretty sweet yarr
