Straight forward problem. This is supposed to be one of the questions which potential Microsoft employees are asked. U2 have a concert that starts in 17 minutes and they must all cross a bridge to get there. All four men begin on the same side of the bridge. You must help them across to the other side. It is night. There is one flashlight. A maximum of two people can cross at one time. Any party that crosses the bridge, either 1 or 2 people, must have the flashlight with them. The flashlight must be carried back and forth, it cannot be thrown, etc. Each band member walks at a different speed. A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower man's pace: * Bono: - 1 minute to cross * Edge: - 2 minutes to cross * Adam: - 5 minutes to cross * Larry: - 10 minutes to cross For example: if Bono and Larry walk across first, 10 minutes have elapsed by the time they get to the other side of the bridge. If Larry then returns with the flashlight, a total of 20 minutes have passed and you have failed the mission. There is no trick to this. It is a simple movement of resources in the appropriate order. There are two known answers to this problem. Microsoft expects you to answer this question in under 5 minutes! My friend gave me this yesterday.... Anyone? |

larry + bono --> (10 minutes) bono <--- (with light) (1 minute) adam + bono ---> (5 minutes) bono <--- (with light) (1 minute) Edge + Bono ---> (2 minutes) awww 2 minutes over... oh well, that's all the work i did in my IT lesson! |

No, no, don't take it personal, I just thought that some malice and bitching about people we love to hate would be helpful at this time of day (I have to go to a funeral ina couple of hours, actually and the only remotely decent online radio I'm able to get is some stupid Jazz FM crap, so bad mood is my game right now). I thought like a group therapy thing or something. |

option 1 Option One Bono + Larry on back = 1 Bono back with light = 1 Bono + Adam on back = 1 bobo back with light = 1 bono + edge on back = 1 total = 5 option 2 as one set are over the second half of the bridge, get the others to meet them half way when bono returns with the light Bono + larry = 10 Bono back half way to meet adam = 0.5 bono + adam half way = 2.5 Bono back half way to meet edge = 0.5 bono and edge to other side = 1 total = 14.5 |

Iron: thanx ol'boy. Well i too feel sorry for you having to work at this time of the night. I'm not sure what happened but the moment I slagged off that Jazz FM radio, it went dumb (some wicked online magick this turns out to be, eh?). Yesterday I was listening to WFMU and it was pretty OK (cuban son, some wicked country and stuff) but I had to leave my office for a couple of hours, and when i got back my colegues apologized to me for having to turn the thing off: "It was unbearable" and I was like 'Why didn't I get to hear the music you guys thought was unbearable, I would've probably loved it. So i just treated them to Up, Bustle and Out's last CD. Cool stuff |

Ok here are some clues.... 2 people cross 1 goes back 2 people cross 1 goes back 2 people cross There are no tricks of people being carried on someone else's back, etc. OK, which people cross at which time still has to be worked out. There's only 17 mins. Larry takes 10 mins, Adam 5. You can't allow them to cross separately, since that would be 15 mins, and you'll never solve the puzzle. So they cross together. Which takes 10 mins. You can't allow either of them to make the return trip with the flashlight either, can you? Since they would still have to get back across again. That would take too long. this help anyone any???? (for the record, there is NO WAY I got this in 5 min) |
