CDs to get for Xmas!

I am struggling to think of CDs I want for Christmas. Can
someone recommend good albums? Anything at all that's
interesting?

So far I've got on the list:

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us
Yo La Tengo - That compilation greatest hits thing
Arvo Part - Berliner Messe
Cat Power - You Are Free
Sigur Rós - Hoppípolla
Elliott Smith - Elliott Smith

Any thoughts for a My Bloody Valentine child who is
struggling to find music he enjoys these days.

i got these on xmas 2003:
• Björk - Vespertine
• Radiohead - Amnesiac

and these on xmas 2004:
• Björk - Debut
• The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite
Sadness
• Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman

okay, they're very well-known and you probably have them
already but they're awesome. : )

for 2005 i think i'm going to ask for the deluxe (okay,
"legacy", whatever) editions of Live at Sin-é (which i
already have in mp3 but it's too good) and of Grace by Jeff
Buckley... and something else but i don't know what. i could
ask for Telegram by Björk. or maybe her Live Box.

Yeah what is that Telegram Bjork thing? I found that the
other day and it confused me. I have quite a few of the ones
you suggested, good choices there I think. Have you got the
Drawing Restraint Bjork one? That might be a nice Xmas gift.

That's an EXCELLENT release. I bought is some years ago and
snapped it in half while demonstrating how CDs couldn't be
snapped in half. So I've bought it twice. I think its time
to dig it out and get into that lonely seasonal spirit
actually.

Talking Heads ones there. You've reminded me about Pink Moon
though - I meant to get it ages ago but I forgot about it.
Thanks for reminding me.

What kind of stuff would you like recommended? Popular or
cult-status.

Telegram was remixes from Post.

Anyway, for Bjork, I would definitly suggest Vespertine,
Debut is good too though.

Medulla however... was not.

Hi - no I haven't got anything by either of those bands,
although Coil I've heard endless good things about. Would
you be able to select a Coil release you think is best for
newcomers? Current 93 I've not heard of...

don_juan_darko - I am up for anything really. I am not
repelled by popular/commercial stuff. I suppose I'm just
looking for stuff that will really blow my mind; I want
another My Bloody Valentine, Prefuse 73, Low, Sonic Youth,
etc (in terms of innovation, not sound)... I haven't heard
much innovative electronic stuff recently, hence why my list
is mainly rocky. But I'm open to anything new. I'm
interested in Morphine, might add them to my list. I'm
actually a big fan of Bjork - I quite enjoy a bit of
Medulla, although its my least favourite of her last three.

Clint, by the way I was don_juan_darko for a bit there, some
confusion...

A lot of Coil's stuff is actually out of circulation right
now... I guess if you can get Astral Disaster is good, but
expensive, if you can download their stuff check out Love's
Secret Domain, and Musick to Play in the Dark 2

Current 93... I don't have anything by them yet, but I've
heard that 'Thunder Perfect Mind' is supposed to be good.

I've got that My Bloody Valentine album Loveless... but I
guess I don't hear what everyone else is hearing...

mappatazee: go and listen to some johnny hallyday, patrick
fiori, florent pagny and dider barbolivian (or whatever his
last name is spelled like) then. this is pretty much the
worst music i know.

uviol: country waltzes? okay, fair enough. i'm not familiar
with them but i have no desire to be.

Ill see if I can get some Coil from soulseek.

You are mad if you don't love Loveless. I discovered it
about 2 years ago and its been my fave album since then,
although I don't listen to it much these days. Have you seen
Lost in Translation? Maybe that will kick start your love
affair with MBV.

Any other suggestions from anyone? Shower me with your
musical tastes.

i think that "Only Shallow" and "Soon" are splendid,
"Loomer" is very good and some others too like "When You
Sleep", but a lot of other tracks are just good/ok... i
can't help being a bit deceived by them (especially after
Only Shallow) and thinking of Loveless as a bit lukewarm
after Loomer...

i think i can see why so many people love it so much though;
maybe someday i'll have a revelation or something and love
it as much, but so far it would get a 7/10 if i had to rate
it.

as for Coil, i'd recommend Musick To Play In The Dark
vol.1.

vol.1 before vol.2 - vol.2 is a bit like vol.1 through a
strange dream/nightmare/distorted glass, it is just as good
but much harder to get into (took months for me to
appreciate it).

i'd also definitely recommend Moon's Milk (in four phases),
the double CD set including all four equinox/solstice EPs...
beautiful.

but yes, you're likely to have a hard time trying to get
your hands on those... i wouldn't sell mine for anything.

by the way - have you heard The Go! Team?

they make me think of My Bloody Valentine on exciters and
euphoriants. it's a lot more "festive" and upbeat, but very
good.

Its interesting you should mention the Go Team, as Kevin
Sheilds of MBV has just done a remix of a Go Team song! Its
rare he does remixes. Its on the Go Team's myspace page. But
no, apart from that one, I'm not familiar with the Go Team -
I've heard their album is decent though, so maybe it can go
onto the list if I can find it somewhere cheapish.

Hmm there's loads more gold on Loveless - I think the only
one I don't care for is Touched. Have you seen Lost in
Translation? Don't want to bang on about it but the Tokyo
nighttime cityscape with 'Sometimes' in the foreground is
just beautiful. When You Sleep and Come In Alone are some
other faves. But I think Sometimes is my favourite.

I'll do some scouring for those Coil releases, thanks for
the recommnendations mate. :D

Definitly check out Coil, it saddens me that Coil really
never got the exposure they deserved here in the US, all the
fuckheads would rather listen to U2...

No offense if you like U2... I'm guilty of owning some of
their stuff myself...

Anyway, I didn't care much for Lost in Translation either,
go figure right? I find Loveless to be about as accessible
as Autechre's Confield...

Some other suggestions though
Emit Ecaps by Spacetime Continuum
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by Flaming Lips
Adore by Smashing Pumpkins
MCMXC a.d. by Enigma (all of their stuff is good)
Violator by Depeche Mode

I'll think of some more in a bit
