what do you consider to be avant garde nowdays?

what's the difference between experimental and avant garde
music in your opinion?

(we probably had this sort of thread before but i have no
time to look for it :)

experimental and avant garde kind of go hand in hand, right?

if you really think about it, they're not really
interchangeable terms, though. experimental implies the act
of experimentation and just describes a process, whereas
avant garde just means anything new or groundbreaking.

right, although experimental usually stands for something
new, right? so therfore probably becomes avan garde..

how do you define new or groundbreaking nowdays? :)

it's hard to say. you probably listen to more new avant
garde music than i do... who has new ideas in music? who
is doing something in a new way?

Difficult question. I think the EAI musicians have changed a
few things, maybe they should be considered avant garde.
It's hard to define what avant garde music is nowadays,
rarely do I hear music which is entirely groundbreaking. I
think there is a lot to explore within microtonality, this
would lead to composers becoming more individual.

jav, im going to have problems with this one :) thanks for
clearing it up though..there are no avant garde artists
overhere, althoough they might think they are. ofcourse
there are avantgardists in domestic scene, but what's
considered avat garde here nowdays was avant garde in uk 20
years ago..

qrter, only because i want to retire when im 35 :)

yeah, I was going to mention something about how people who
prefer genres besides electronica would probably define
avante garde differently from us... but it appears you know
that already. :)

Experimental musicians have shaved heads and avant garde
musicians are balding but let their remaining hair grow long
and wear EuroHats.
