thanks.

what do i look for in these installations? this particular
one is going to take place in some gallery and will be
opened for about a month, featuriing quite a few artists i
think..how will i know if what im hearing/seeing is good or
shite? do i trust my own judgement? (the problem is my
standards seem to be high or something)..this sucks..

haha...well this is how i look it at...

russell haswell does things to physically upset you, which
worked, i felt kinda sick and uncomfortable and it was
fucking LOUD and HARSH!!! - so if that is his goal...it
works...and for some reason i enjoyed it (it did, however,
nearly kill my friend who was on drugs)

the art gallery installation i saw was cool in that they
made all the noise from found sounds live - they amplified
the floor, the tapping of people walking and scuffing, a
refrigerator (for a sort of bass effect), the bar for
clang's etc - it was pretty fucking amazing - it was like
walking in an instrument

the noise / video one was done all by objects the guy bought
that day in a pawn shop - they do installations where he
just has to go on the fly and every night is different

i would say if you enjoy the noises / ideas then youll be
fine - if you expect it to be conventional you most likely
wont enjoy yourself

and my standard for music is...if i can make something
better / compose the same noises i dont enjoy it

hope that helps

it helps..except for the last part of me making something
better. i don't make music so from that perspective
everything would be top notch :)

but yeah, i hope to see/hear something like that..preferably
as much improvisation and as little pre recorded sound as
possible.

i saw haswell before and loved it btw.

hopefully the installation is going to offer something to
really sense the sound in space..something different you get
to see at most gigs..

i'll probably have to do an interview with the curator and
probably some artists..i have no idea what to ask them yet,
as this seem to be striclly technical perspective of sound
as opposed to constructed music..i guess i'll have to go ask
about this on some physics forum :)

russell haswell's cd is a piece of sound art. and it's an
installation everytime you listen to it.

i just read what these sound instalations will be about.
looks to me it's going to be more about the sound itself and
not much to do with music. most of these sound artists
studied art, architecture, sound exploring and stuff like
that..im having a feeling this is going to be some artsy
shit that won't give any pleasure musically at all. for
example there's this one installation where the artist will
process sound through his body..using body like a mixpult or
something..and another one using organs to produce
sounds..where another one is going to experiment with how
sound will affect the audience and the other way around, how
audience can affect the sound. it has nothing to do with
music, more so with some fancy art that i don't dig at
all..i have no idea what i am going to write about. ofcourse
i can get surprised and it's going to sound awesome, but i
doubt it..

hahah, in that case you need a better self-confidence.

that's easy for a philosopher to say..

hahaha

in that case, let me ask you this:

does the question "do I like this music?" sound like a valid
question to you (if it does, you haven't understood the
question)? wouldn't it be safe to assume that you already
know the answer before you ask the question?

I guess that answers your question about whether or not you
should trust your own judgement.

yeah yeah, but see, what if everyone else likes it and i
think it's shit? what if i miss something because i haven't
studied art and sound engineering?

even though I'm pretty sure you're joking now:

doesn't matter. music isn't objectively good, and I think
you know that.

you may also substitute the word "music" there for "art" or
something...

lets put it this way then. painting of mona lisa has this
value to it that most people seem to appreciate...what if
for example i find it to be shit? the thing is i will have
to make a review about these installations most likelly and
therefore be objective about it i suppose..

yes, what if you don't like it and everyone else
does?

nothing happens.

if you're going to be "objective" about art, you'll have to
find out the "intention" of the piece by asking the artist
and then see whether or not he's accomplished what he was
trying to do, but I don't know how objective one can be with
modern art, and certain pieces don't really even have any
intention.

if you're that worried, just copy/paste someone elses
opinion of it.

exactly! "modern art" - i was assigned to do this simply
because im one of the few that is into electronic
music...someone into art performance would be a much better
choice imo. i'll talk to the editor today and ask exactly
what he had in mind, because im having a feeling he thinks
this is going to have something to do with music..

"find out the "intention" of the piece by asking the artist
and then see whether or not he's accomplished what he was
trying to do"

that is a very resonable point, and if i'll do this i might
do it exactly like that!

from the pieces i've seen, talking to the artist afterwards
really does help put it into perspective better, and
increase your appreciation for it. of course, those who are
good at explaining things can offer subtle but sufficient
hints before the pieces, but most seem to be far better at
expressing concepts through art rather than speech, so
you're often on your own. i guess the more you go to, the
more you grok the general concepts.

well, i've read what some artists are planning to do, but it
doesn't really make much sense if you know what i mean..a
bunch of philosophical bullshit which talks a lot but says
nothing..

yeah, art..it'd be much better to send a philosophy student
to write a review on that crap :)

it's tolstoj in slovenian as well btw.
