Grooves Mag, perhaps THE only magazine dedicated to
non-Ibiza-style electronic music (heh heh) is not going to
print anymore. This absolutely sucks, it seems they're
"pulling a m3rck"â„¢ and somehow they think this is a good
idea.

I find this highly disappointing considering their
explanation has a remote semblance of sense up until the
end when they rope you into believing its worth paying $10
for a virtual subscription. Uh..... guess what guys, 90% of
your content (gear and music) is NOT payed for by 90% of
your audience. And now you expect them fork over 10 bucks
after you took away their toliet reading?!?!

Why does it feel like everything about electronic music is
at a conceptual, technical, and emotional standstill.
(fuckers)

hey glotch, you bought the magazine, right? you didn't just
steal it out of the store, yes? or, if you read a friend's
copy, he or she bought it, right?

it costs $ to make a magazine that's good, even if it's a
virtual one. i try to pay my writers, and it will cost
something to produce this digital magazine. and the first
issue is free!

it bothers me most of all that grooves can't be in print
anymore, but it can't for a number of reasons. we'd
appreciate your continued support, but if you think
everything should be free on the internet just because, well
what can i tell you.

Uh, guess what guys, your readership can't fork out $10
because, guess what guys, they're all below the poverty line
but despite this, guess what guys, they're all keen on
making electronic music which is, guess what guys, a luxury
indulgence, but, guess what guys, we ain't ever gonna pay,
guess what for guys, for what we appreciate, be it music,
magazines or whatever, but, guess what guys, we'll sure moan
about it, one way or, guess what guys, the other.

Sean-

Actually, I own every issue. And of course, I'll buy the
final physical magazine even though it will be free online.
Simply, I'm opinionated because I care- even if the
expression of said opinion is undesirable. As a matter of
fact though, I was instrumental in getting some of the
people you've actually written about to be avid readers of
Grooves. SouthJersey/Philly/DELMassive represent. Anyways,
I'm sorry if my original message was a bit tacky, this just
took me as a surprise. I dont have a problem paying for a
product when of course its actually a product. In this case
it seems like its more a representation of a product, which
of course, I'll probably end up subscribing to anyways.
Ultimately, its a great way to alleviate printing costs,
though I'm sure you'll agree the amount of estimated buyers
of your magazine and future virtual subscribers to your
website will be significantly disproportionate. People just
dont like paying for digital content esp. when its of a more
esoteric tinge. Unfortunately, what this means is general
readership goes down and everyone loses - though I'm sure
you've considered this and I trust you feel like this is the
best decision.
Regardless, I'm excited to see where this goes, though I
will miss whipping out my Grooves on the john, or on the
plane, or between class.

Dogbelch-

You're the funniest person I've never met.

hi gl0tch,

sorry for being defensive before. i am aware that readership
will drop moving online and having a subscription fee will
drop readership even further. however, that subscription
money will allow me to get the best content i can and will
make us less dependent on advertising. (ten bucks isn't a
whole lot anyway.)

in addition, the digital format will allow us to reach the
rest of the world (outside the u.s and canada), where our
distribution was really tiny--and without people having to
wait weeks for the issue to show up.

as i said, if i could keep grooves a print mag i definitely
would, but that's just not possible at this time for a few
reasons. in the meantime, we'll be putting most of our
reviews on the web site for free and updated daily. a new
version of the site will go up soon, too.

so hopefully the whole package will become the best
electronic music magazine on the web.

Basically you're saying "Dan, please write for us, there's a
blank cheque with your name on it if you just give us 250
words on the new Smortmore Vex Compilation" and that you
want to see another picture of the dog that appearead in my
kitchen.

Word.

The only other equivalent that I am aware of that seemingly
approaches what you are talking about is igloomag or
em411.com, but their admin (many think its Bogdan R.) is
awol and content just isnt what it used to be. So yeah,
could be ripe for the pickin's...

good luck!

Yeah, I guess I'm sorta disappointed too b/c I always wanted
to do a cover for Grooves. Woulda done it for free too.
One of my faves was issue 9 the dark ambient robotic thingy
cover and 10, the hip vectory one.

BTW Sean, did RLR Robbie manage to get his Fake-techre ad in
the last one? I think he was planning on using my
Fake-techre Untilteduh design for the ad. I guess we'll
have to wait and see
