one of the best things in life, if you ask me. some of my favs being raiden fighters jet, and most recently ive acquired ESPGaluda for the playstation 2, and castle shikigami. the only one we've got in the arcade here is Strikes 1942 II and i'm usually top-score on that machine...
around here people refer to shmups as the IDM of video games. when the urge to hit that person in the face subsides, in a way, i realize that they are for the most part correct... so, let's discuss SHMUPS!!!!!!!!

i lost a good 2 years of my life to counter strike. once i broke the addiction, i have never gone back to video games...
well except for half life 2 and GTA San Andreas, a couple brief relapses.

shootem'up usually refers to a game that is 2D, isometric or top-down in view, and you have infinite ammo, finite bombs -
not like counter-strike at all

U.N Squadron for arcade/SNES and especially Thunder Force 4, those are my favorites. TF4, oh man... awesome art direction and an incredible soundtrack. I couldn't beat the game or come anywhere close, but it was still fun to use the infinite lives cheat and just soak in the high art of the whole experience. The Genesis was a shmup paradise... Thunder Force, Hellfire, Vapor Trail, M.U.S.H.A... oh man.
Neo Geo was good for shmups too, they don't get much better than Blazing Star.

i've recently been going (or at least trying) on a shooter spree
was luck to find ikaruga at a gamestop for dc near where i used to live for only 25 bucks. innovate and beautiful.
bought gradius v and r-type final soon after that on ps2. gradius is an overall solid old school style shooter game, but r-type sucked ass. way too slow for a shooter.
my friend recently burned me a copy of a homebrew (sort of) dc shooter pack made by jeff, ma in 2004. has ikaruga, border down, psyvariar 2, and zero gunner 2 on it. psyvariar is pretty sweet but i don't understand how it works to an extent, and my brain can't handle it most of the time. zero gunner is awesome, with the 360 rotation and is great fun in multiplater. i've been getting into border down, which is pretty good as well, but the border system kind of pisses me off and i prefer vertical shooters.
i just bought castle shikigami 2 today and it's pretty good so far. the box art is awful and i would think it's an rpg if i didn't know any better. the "storyline" is laughable and i haven't determined if the voice acting is so bad to the point where it's funny or embarrasing. all that aside, the gameplay is pretty sweet. weapon powers up if you are very close to immediate fire and usually gives point bonuses. i like how there are many characters with varying attacks. one real complaint, the screen gets quite small with the black lines on the side (smaller than ikaruga it seems)
my favorite shooter of all time is still twin cobra on nes though. nothing seems to have matched that game yet. amazing music as well.
in a somewhat related note, i've been looking for intelligent qube on psx (in stores and shadily in file format online) with no luck. it is for sale on ebay for 8 billion dollars and on amazon and such. my friend had some luck on IRC, but the game froze on the logo screen :(

Good Thread save cygnus and thecurbcreeper. Shoot'em ups are scrolling and blasting games...
I always liked (non-scrolling) Blasteroids.

Raptor was dope. The fact that you were able to purchase weapons and power-ups between levels considerably heightened the replay value.

GENRES: shoot'em up generally refers to an "arcade" style game, just like beat'em up does (as in Tekken or Double Dragon). So Raiden, Raptor, Gradius and Ikaruga are typical examples; but so are Panzer Dragoon, Space Harrier and other 3d-oriented shooters.
It's not difficult to see how FPS-games, like Doom or Duke Nukem 3d, could be called "shoot'em ups", especially in cases like Serious Sam where the emphasis is on straightforward annihilation of enemies heading your way.
Maybe these should be called "first person shoot'em ups"?
"FPS'em up"; I just made that up.
ANYWAY, my favourites across the board include Raiden (Arcade), Gradius (NES), R-Type Delta (PSX), Raptor (PC), Ikaruga (DC) and Apiday (Amiga 500).
If you're very serious about getting the best (and the strangest!) shoot'em ups out there, I HEARTILY recommend a japanese-only release called "Cho Aniki" (PSX).
"Cho Aniki" does to shoot'em ups what Mortal Kombat did to beat'em ups (and with humour and style!). You'll laugh your ass off...

I have mars matrix on the DC and its INTENSE! I could never even find Ikaruga in stores for GC, let alone for DC... but I would like to get it on one system or the other some day... what would you say made the DC version better than gamecube?
by the way, I always refer to these games as scrollers, but shootemups works too I guess.
