I am more or less new to laptop/glitch/idm. Before I ask my question, I want to say right away that I have exposed myself to all of the popular artists e.g. Boards, Aphex, Squarepush, etc. In addition, I know pretty well Data'chi, Nob. Takemura, Soul Oddity.
I like Autechre the most. As far as I know, I have greedily collected everything they have ever released and all the remixes and side projects I've heard about. Unlike a lot of other people I have talked to, I personally think everything after Tri Rep. is better than anything before (I do like the early stuff though) and I love very much the albums that seem to be the most in dispute (Confield, Draft, Untilted, etc.) I don't understand why all my other friends don't like them: I enjoyed Autechre immediately: I love their combination of technical virtuosity, strange, alien timbres, sonic manipulatio, intricate beats, etc. They seem to me to have a better command of their equipment then anyone else I have heard so far. I'm looking for other artists to discover that have similar qualities to Autechre, but I haven't really been happy with the search thus far. For instance, Data'chi is really good, (and maybe I don't understand) but when i listen to him, he is amazing but most of the emphasis seems to be placed on spliced, intricate beat work and percussive sounds rather than the other tones, pads, and washes(it's hard to really pin down). Eg, Autechre seems consistently to move the ear between various elements more e.g. beats, pads, washes, etc. (fyi-I'm not complaining about melody) It's stylistic preference, but Autechre seems to choose to aim for what seems to be a balance between percussive/beat manipulation and other elements to aim for more of an even soundscape. The people who I have researched who are supposed to be good at similar things seem more beat heavy (eg data'chi-elements & mmale/ffem). OV Schriach so far seems the most versatile and similar. Any suggestions of similar Autechre style artists? I'm sorry if it sounds like i just want

I hope you're not, what would be the point?
this Phoenecia album doesn't sound a lot like Autechre, more like a Phoenecia album (har har) but it does kind of fall into the "a balance between percussive/beat manipulation and other elements to aim for more of an even soundscape" category you describe.

you're paying attention then - that is exactly what I said.
it does however pertain to the statement "a balance between percussive/beat manipulation and other elements to aim for more of an even soundscape".

Richard Devine to me is the closest of all to Autechre, but with a loud crunchy backbeat... Lipswitch is a good place to start...
Crunch is kinda the same territory, but warmer
Some consider early Funkstorung Autechre inspired, but their later stuff is a lot more organic using real intruments, singers, rappers, soul phrasing and such
Arovane? Maybe

"I have exposed myself to all the popular artists" Perverted exhibitionist.
You should get "crunch - "1"", the album with 'toe tac tic' on it. Download soulseek (slsk.org) and then use it to download toe tac tic or any of these other examples (it's be good to try qrter's 'brownout' suggestion just so you can see for yourself what a terrible suggestion that was). Also try "telefon tel aviv" but only the very first 3 track of their main album, forget what it's called. Also otto von schirach's 8000 bc.
These are all the most tech-wizardry sounding. They are like "special effects" except with sound. aphex and autechre are already givens.

thanks again for introducing Crunch to me all those years ago W...
Also the last Venetian Snares- Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding is incredibly Autechrerish (right down to the cover which is a bit of a riff on Draft) but he is such a chameleon I wont go the bank on the rest of his stuff for those abstract alien soundscapes

It's my duty to give the 'crunch is good' meme as much replication as the 'qrter is gay' meme. I'm currently working on mass email spamming and google page ranking schemes for both.

I would suggest Alva Noto - Transspray. I always considered it the most autechrish of Nicolai's work. Although it's not so rich.

I think richard devine and phoenicia are better than autechre. And you already mentioned listening to soul oddity, which is phoenicias old music. Also listen to einoma.

Completely different in style, but similar to Autechre in complexity and not too heavily relying on beats: Low Res - Approximate Love Boat (Plug Research)
One of my all time favourite albums! Highly recommended!

Hello Whitman. I agree with that. I don't think it's good to search for ~copies of autechre. they're quite unique. you wrote "similar" but perhaps you're during the amazement phase of an autechre enthusiast and want more and more. maybe try Gescom instead. not that similar but...the sipirit is there, you know ;]

Thank you for the suggestions and help. I would have explained myself less poorly but the size constraints forced me to sort of rush it. Obara nailed me on the head: I have enough objectivity to realize I'm in the "amazement phase of a [new] autechre enthusiast and want more and more". I don't want to pawn off my responsibilities to do my own research on anyone here; I look around where i can and do some research but I don't know anyone else who likes this stuff and can help. I'm amazed by what some of these guys can do sonically, esp. ae. Thanks again.
