Orbital/The Orb

i know they're two different bands (with probably nothing
to do with each other except that it's electronica and the
similar names), but i suddenly remembered liking a track i
had heard some time ago by one of them (memory too blurry to
remember which one).

so i'm starting this topic, which is kind of bad and stupid
because its title is likely to trick people into believing
they're related now.

sorry about that.

anyway.

can you tell me about them?

first of all:

Orbital was 2 brothers.
Orb is not 2 brothers.

What was the track you heard, btw ?

P.E.T.R.O.L. by Orbital.

(there was also Funny Break (One Is Enough) on Wipeout
Fusion but it was very probably a remix... and a loopable
version anyway.)

well, i can talk about Orbital. is that ok ? though i don't
know their biography. I like most of their stuff except the
very very old, not quite developed yet

those two tracks, yeah, ok...a, Petrol is from In-Sides,
it's my fav Orbital album. Too bad i couldn't hear it played
live.

If I had to pick albums, I'd say Orbital's Snivilisation &
In Sides, and The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld. I
quite fancy the new Orb album too. Sadly Orbital have quit,
even though Paul Hartnoll (one of the brothers) has provided
a few tracks for Wipeout Pure etc.

i started my adventure into Orb when i found Orb "Live '93"
2cd in a second-hand-full-of-heavy-metal-stuff-shop. I don't
know how the album got there. When i asked the owner to play
the album and he did - i could see one of the most bored
faces ever. He was happy he got rid of it, i was happy i got
it almost for free.

just in case you don't know, the last Orbital show is
available somewhere near Loopz site, along with the last
single/video, featuring Lisa Gerrard on vocals.

You don't know the difference between The Orb and Orbital,
even though that's like saying "Cheese, Eggs... they all
come from a farm, right?" And you wonder why no one gives a
shit about breakcore?

The Orb is strictly speaking not just "one guy who does
loads of collaborating stuff." I mean, Alex Paterson is
surely the driving force, but the original The Orb were
Paterson & Jimi Cauty (of The KLF fame). Most of the
original The Orb alà 1988-1990 was their work.

In the early 90's it was mostly Paterson + Kris Weston
("Thrash"). Then Paterson teamed up with Thomas Fehlmann for
several albums, and with whom he's now released this year's
excellent "Okie Dokie It's The Orb on Kompakt", with loads
of additional hand in the mix.

But the Fehlmann part of the equation is pretty stable, and
not just a passing collaboration.

It's true, though, that Orbital were much more of a
"compact" duo, with a clear division of labour.

As for who's "BETTER"... I couldn't say. I generally enjoy
Orbital more, but The Orb have some highly intricate and
more trippy stuff.

The Orb>William Orbit

I love both bands but they are nothing alike. Over the
years I've probably been more of an Orbital fan simply
because their stuff is easier to listen to. The Orb usually
takes more patience and attention to detail. Nevertheless I
have quite a few releases by each of them, and I might even
say I like the Orb better.. he's/they're just so bizarre and
imaginative.

p.s. The Orb actually samples Reich twice, at least. In one
of the Peel Sessions there is a great version of OOBE that
uses another sample from different movement of Electric
Counterpoint (the piece sampled in Little Fluffy Clouds).
Either Alex Paterson was hard up for samples or he's a huge
Reich fan.
