ok.. someone here must've heard this, and I need to know even if it should turn out to be some kind of urban legend or example constructed by someone... People have mentioned something about a tribe that doesn't have time at all, and I just need to know its name and if it is an example, who made it...

I know the austrailian aboriginees were noted for not having anything relating to time in their traditions and beliefs. Don't know if that is what you are looking for.

can you remember if it was a made up example (which would make it harder to find, as the name of the tribe probably would vary quite a bit), or a real tribe?

well, it's more like not having anything at all related to time. no time-words, no time conjugating of words, no difference between now and now (about one tenth of a second after you read the first now) or now and next or last month... quite simply no concept of time whatsoever.

these people = those aboriginies, not the ones I'm talking about, who don't even consider it at all.. the aboriginies seem to have some concept of past and present

i'm pretty sure it wasn't made up, but it's been a while since i read it so i'm not sure. there was also a tribe, in south america if i remember correctly, that didn't have a word for left or right so they used the directions instead, mostly west and east.
westerners also look at time on a horizontal scale while the chinese, for example, look at it on a vertical scale.

i once read about a tribe in new guinea that only had 2 words to describe colour and they were said to sense colours differently from people that had more words for colour. according to most/latest studies this is however wrong.

so are messageboards and concepts that bare names such as "idm".
of the 250 that started this first year probably 70-80% were girls. so if gay refers to something that is "girly" then you're probably on to something.

as a psych student, you should be able to tell he's kidding, I think...
anyway, how did they prove that that other tribe actually sensed colours the same as us?

Yeah. The reading I used to do about tribal lifestyles seemed to say that. Modern aboriginees that have integrated into western style living do have a sence of time, but more traditional ones seem to see the idea of it as a joke, if they are willing to consider it at all.

yeah, professors really like that.

hahah! stop fighting you two!
anyway, yeah.. the point I'm trying to make is that you can't automatically assume that everyone thinks or percieves things like you.. the inverted qualia issue is already mentioned and then I just wanted something a bit more substantial from the real world...
..and now that I think about it, all of these examples can be used, and are actually quite great! I just had my mind too set on one thing.. of course, it is also way more difficult to imagine that someone would not percieve time than it would be to imagine someone not having more than two colors (colour-blind people are an everyday phenomenon, so...)...
anyway, thanks guys! I think I'll use the original example as a quick note after I've used the ones supplied here since I can't remember what the tribe was called...

you have to be able to back up any example given in an essay with facts. that's how it works. you can't just make broad assumptions, it makes the rest of the essay less believable.

hehe, i assumed he was kidding, yes.
proving it wasn't very complicated. they just showed them some colours and asked if "this was the same colour as this one or not". most people, except colorblind people and maybe a few others, also have a typical sense of what the "real" or "perfect" green, red, blue or yellow is, for example. If you have 5 different colours of say, red, most people, except for colorblind and maybe a few others, have a pretty good sense of which one of those colours is the best representative for the colour red...if that makes any sense :)... and so did those people who only had 2 words for colour.
