I saw A Hawk And A Hacksaw live last saturday and I think it
was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. They play as
a pair, him playing percussion and accordion at the same
time (he has drumsticks taped to different places on his
body so he can move his head and hit a hi hat, for example),
she mostly plays violin, although she does play bits of
melodica and on a tiny xylophone.

it feels very.. naked to see them on stage, just the two of
them, she mostly watching him while they play. after a while
they got up and walked up to us (we were all sitting down -
I was sitting front row) and left the drums and just played
together - certainly the best part. they would play with
eachother, against eachother, he would suddenly drop to the
floor and lie on his back, still playing the accordion, she
playing the violin while standing over him, looking down
(she's quite small).

they missed notes, rhythmically they missed several beats,
Jeremy sang and his voice was quite unsure (but incredible -
when he sang in front of the audience he did so without
microphone) but the way they played, the relaxedness, the
looseness, it made the whole thing wonderful.

they played for 70 minutes and my friend and I were
surprised - we hardly noticed time passing.

I think half the room fell in love with the violin player.
:)

no, sadly not at all.

I talked to the organiser who had picked them up that
afternoon from the airport and spent half the day with them.
he said they were just the nicest people.

that video doesn't do them credit - it's much, MUCH more
atmospheric live!

damn, im trying to find some contact with this club in
triest where im supposed to see them but nothing..i don't
even know what time it begins in - did it start at normal
gig evening time?

this is just what music is all about ot me..to see them play
like that..i don't care about how perfect something sounds,
it's what it feels like that counts..

i like their albums a lot, but i think this is music that
was meant to be listened to and performed live.

oh there's an mp3 of "portland town", my favourite.

they played and sang that live too. I never knew it was a
cover.

I saw them a few weeks ago. It was fun, they only did 45
mins or less. Got a bit repetetive after a while; a bit too
energetic all the time. Violin lady was quite hot. I love
accordians but I don't think folk is particularly my thing,
if thats possible. I thought the drumstick strapped to his
hat was a gimmick, because it made almost no noise.

saw them last night and liked it a lot. it wasn't that high
on my scale of favourite live shows, but still very very
nice. i was surprised they made the songs sound so much
alike the ones on album. i mean, there were four people
recording those album songs and barnes takes his time with
every song, so yeah, definitely a nice surprise that. they
only played for about an hour, but the atmosphere was real
nice..abooout 30 people attended, but it was a very small
club and it just made us all sort of more connected. heather
is lovely fo sho! <3

its a perfect gimmick, I doubt anyone would describe the
show without saying "Yo this dude had a stick on his hat!"

I would be surprised if anyone talked about it like that.

people I know have only mentioned it in passing, amongst
other things.

the audience that goes to these shoes is tiny, certainly not
the kind of people that get impressed by something like that
- and like I said, as far as I've heard, he does actually
use it.

it'd be even better if he'd ask someone in the audience to
sit behind the drums..i wouldn't.
