Yeah. Well 80 years ago mundane meant factual.

Identity is how you see yourself in context to your
environment, role is how you choose to act in your
environment.

Exactly. But what if your identity is flawed....how do you
know which ROLE fits best?

IMO;

Once again, this is assuming that their is a yes/no,
right/wrong. Its hard to discuss those circumstances when
you are dealing with something as subjective as identity.
Pretty much the only meter you can effectively use would be
the general moral state of your environment or culture,
which runs the risk of being "wrong" in the greater scheme
of things, or the larger society.

There are two answers that I can give you to your question
that don't break the subjective 'seal'.
1 - Do whatever makes you feel right.
2 - Do whatever you can justify.

Neither is right or wrong as far as I can see it, but if you
can combine the two without using one as the reason for the
other, I would consider that pretty close to having found
both your identity and role.

Isnt the enviroment I adapt my identity the same where I
adapt my 'role' ?

Yes. But if you feel bad about your identity or role, the
best thing I could suggest would be to either change your
identity, or change your perception of your identity.
Neither is an easy path when you bring subjective paradigms
into the equation.

I find most people don't choose their identity, so much as
fall into it because they have been conditioned to
understand that that is the way they are supposed to be.
Unfortunately, in more 'enlightened' environments, it can be
difficult to 'find' your identity, because the whole idea of
right and wrong becomes a lot more grey. As far as I can see
it, this is why in the more 'enlightened' cultures, people
fit into their identity at a slower rate. Unfortunate side
effect being that the less enlightened are capable of
finding their identity, accepting their role, affecting
their culture and generally being more productive, because
the consious act of arriving at their identity wasn't a
factor.

Who exactly told them to act/be the way they are 'supposed'
to be? The term Identity is coined by Eric Erikson right?

I am not sure who coined what term, but I don't think its
that anybody consiously tells them to act in a certain way.
Its more that societies have a tenancy to condition people
to fit a certain architype of identity, or identity pattern.
Minor variences are usually allowed and embraced, but
outright antisociality is usually frowned upon. For this
reason, people usually either take an identity early on, or
act the part of having not chosen. The latter is very
popular nowadays. The only thing this ever really achieves
would be the dumbing of the 'intelectual' groups because
they aren't focused enough.
