yes, anyone who says to use anything else (so far as on windows) probably has really just not tried utorrent yet. it is a bit new, but it pretty much surpasses every aspect of the previous kings of the torrent.
if you are behind a router or anything you should open up the incoming port (and always make sure winxp firewall is off or opened for the client)
it will work without direct incoming connections but because your client has to make all connections outwards rather than additional connections coming directly in you wont get as fast downloads.

it might be a good idea to explain the basics of torrents, how it actually works, seeing as it is a bit different to regular p2p.

Download the program and install it.
When you go to grab a torrent file choose "open" and utorrent will take care of the rest. Saving it to a destination you choose. Its fast easy and efficient

download speeds aren't exceeding 20kps, azureus is still the fastest for me (apart from the obvious ram and bandwidth it eats up)

basically, it's like this:
person 1 has file A on his computer. person 1 wants to share file A.
person 1 makes a torrent file (probably using a torrent client, which is the same as what you'll use to download with) and this is uploaded to a server. other people visit the server and download this torrent file, which serves as a kind of marker. everyone who has this torrent file and is online, either has file A on their computer or wants it there.
now the fun begins.
let's say 3 persons have downloaded person A's torrent file. persons 2, 3 and 4 will now start downloading file A, but not just from person 1. each person will be receiving different bits of file A, which can then immediately also be downloaded by other downloaders - for example: person 2 is downloading from person 1 (the original) but ALSO from person 3 and 4 (the other downloaders). it's a distributed system, which makes it much faster.
this probably doesn't clear up anything, but there you go.
handy to know - persons who have a complete file and share it are called seeders, persons who are downloading are called leechers.
persons who download and then immediately stop sharing are referred to as cunts.

I tried utorrent and I didn't like it.
I got slower downloads and uploads. Also, I couldn't configure it as much as I like to.

i routinely get in excess of 250kbps with utorrent. it may be doing something differently than azaurus does, but its not doing anything poorly.
i trust you opened up the correct inward ports?
(you might have had them set up right for the other client)

I must agree about utorrent's superiority. At the moment it uses 8 times less memory than that fucking hog Azureus. Aaaah, and the sweet fast non-java GUI.
I found absolutely no difference in speeds.

avoid azereus if you have an old computer, because java is quite bulky and will take up a lot of memory. use abc instead, like me.

Utorrent, how could you disappoint me so? When I try to seed a file with unicode letters in the filename, you indicates on the progress bar that the file is empty.
