i should really talk to you a bit more about these rock classics some day :)
taff, dagger sounds nice, but i really like that sort of psychedelic, misterious touch in the venus of furs..not that im looking for something exactly like that, but something a bit more rich musically perhaps..hmm

imo, their most depressing/melancholy works are Daydream Nation and Sister. this could be disputed, but that's my personal feeling on them. their earlier works are more no wave influenced (though nowhere as fucked up as real no wave), and their 90's stuff is more pop-oriented. my own favorite SY albums are EVOL, Bad Moon Rising and Experimental Jet Set...
evol and sister are both good starting points...

Post-rock's string stuff hsa to give everything to VU&Nico. That and detuned guitars played with screwdrivers.
Well, the Bob Dylan outtake of Desolation Row from Bootleg Series Vol. 7 is dated from mid-1965 and it contains everything that would be found a year later with the VU. Knowing the connection back in those years between Dylan and Warhol, it's no surprise. :) So influence to Dylan, more principally Michael Bloomfield.
I love Sister Ray :)

i'm wondering what the hell style over substance means when it comes to music...
anyhow. i wouldn't call this song epic, but i would definitely say it's got this really great atmospheric quality to it... everything about it seems to evoke one very creepy place... it seems like this sort of thing must have been pretty influential on people like tricky (or other artists who influenced tricky)... but that's pure conjecture... maybe what i really mean to say is that i find it similar.

hmm, personally i feel this song is much heavier, colder, spookier to any tricky stuff..tricky doesn't have this mysteriousnes in his songs..could have something to do with being 30 years older than tricky's music..

Tolstoyed if you want an epic try The Diamond Sea (by Sonic Youth so that´s two hits in one strike) which is a 21 minute whirlwind! Possibly the greatest track ever ;) It´s on Washing Machine, which is one of my favourite albums by sy.

other minor epics:
Smashing Pumpkins - Porcelina of the vast oceans Tool - well just about everything, haha but if you try one song by tool, try Third Eye
eh..
agh all I can think of is obvious ones :/ But I´m jealous of you for not having heard Sonic Youth :) If you like them you have a long road before you littered with great music.

oh and for another Pumpkins epic: Drown. The full version lasts about 8 minutes and it´s as psychedelic as they ever got (and sadly very early on in their career). But I´ll quit whining about the Pumpkins now; you probably don´t even like them.

There is a big difference imo! The older stuff is much more vital and energetic (and weird) and rocks a lot more, at times. I recently got the reissue of Goo (1991 I think) and it is superb; it made me lose interest in their later work a bit. Although I quite like them old rockstars in their fifties.

well, try SP - Siamese Dream for the ultimate poprock album (and it´s got some great epic songs too, btw) that´s what I appreciate it for. I used to play it every day when I was 15. Ah good times...
